Welcome to Inspire Learning
Teaching School Hub

Following the announcement about the funding criteria for schools around NPQs we have made that the main focus of this week’s newsletter.

As we approach the end of what has been a challenging year, can we take the opportunity to thank you for engaging with us as a Hub. It’s strange to think how far we have travelled in the short space of time since our designation. The landscape has changed with reforms designed to create the world class education that we all want for our children, young people and staff.

We look forward to continuing to work with you all over the coming terms but for now, we wish you all a restful summer break.

ECF update

Many thanks to the hundreds of you who have signed up to be part of the national roll out of  ECF with us! We are looking forward to welcoming your Early Career Teachers to the programme in September.

For schools who have not yet signed up - there is still time!

Please bear in mind that Induction of Early Career Teachers cannot start until schools have identified HOW their statutory entitlement will be met.

Of key importance:

Schools should have received an email from the DfE inviting you to sign up to their new online service.

Steps to take if your school hasn’t received this

DfE Sign-in support request –

https://help.signin.education.gov.uk/contact

https://manage-training-for-early-career-teachers.education.gov.uk/ or email continuing-professional-development@digital.education.gov.uk for support

There are different options that schools can take, one of which is the fully funded Full Induction Programme which we are pleased to be offering for all schools in Liverpool and Wirral. Please watch the recording of our webinar ECF Information webinar if you require general information or contact Andy Ash or Jane Kennedy with specific questions/for assistance with your next steps.

You can express interest in doing the Full Induction Programme with us by filling out the form on this page.

For schools who have recently signed up:

The process of confirming places and drawing down the funding to support this essential area of teacher development continues. Please look out for an email from Natasha Waters (natasha.waters@stjohnbosco.org.uk) which will contain a ‘confirmation of intent’ for you to complete and return.

NQT+1

In case you missed it:

5% time off timetable

Please note the following information is being issued on behalf of the Department of Education.

In June the Prime Minister announced next steps in the government’s plans to boost education recovery.

In recognition of the challenging initial teacher training and induction newly qualified teachers (NQTs) have experienced, all state funded schools that currently have an NQT who is due to complete induction this summer will have access to a one-off payment to further support the development of this cohort.

Schools with NQTs due to complete induction this summer will have access to funding for the equivalent of an additional 5% off timetable for next academic year so these teachers have additional time to invest in their development. This time off timetable is not statutory but it has been designed to be used flexibly so that as many new teachers as possible can benefit from this additional support.

  • Time off timetable can be grouped together in different ways, for example, taken as whole days or half days.

  • Schools will be able to access DfE-accredited development materials based on the Early Career Framework for this cohort to use during this time off timetable.

  • Schools will receive this funding in the summer term of 2022. Funding will be based on School Workforce Census returns.

Cognitive Science in the Classroom Review

On Friday 16th July 2021 a large systematic review completed by Dr Thomas Parry and colleagues at the University of Birmingham will be published. This study, which has taken several years, has systematically evaluated the research into cognitive science and its practical applications in the classroom. The headline findings (shared in a webinar on 9th July) will be of interest to all school leaders and teachers.

In essence, it seems that practices such as spaced learning, retrieval practice and using knowledge organisers need to be applied with care in our classrooms. They are most effective for students in KS3, learning maths and science.

You can access a recording of Dr Parry summarising the research here. The final report should be published on the Education Endowment Foundation website.
