Good morning, Needham!

Town Meeting Members wrapped up the 2022 Annual Town Meeting and Special Town Meeting Monday. Over the course of three nights, Town Meeting Members approved the Fiscal Year 2023 budget, funding for the renovation of the Emery Grover School Administration Building, property tax relief for seniors and those with disabilities, a homerule petition to remove the Needham Police Department from Civil Service and much more. REMINDER SUMMER HOURS: The Town of Needham transitions to Summer Hours Monday, May 23rd. Some Town buildings will close at noon on Fridays and be open later on Tuesday evenings. In addition, the Recycling and Transfer Station (RTS) will close at noon on Fridays beginning Friday, May 27th. This is the Friday of Memorial Day weekend. The RTS will be open Saturdays 7:30 to 4 pm.

COVID-19 Update

State Now Offering Free Telehealth Appointments for Paxlovid Treatment

The state is now offering free telehealth appointments for residents who test positive for COVID-19 and want to see if they qualify for Paxlovid, a Covid-19 treatment pill. To be eligible, you must test positive for COVID-19 AND have symptoms. Treatment must begin as soon as possible after testing positive and within 5 days of the onset of symptoms. You must also have certain medical conditions that put you at higher risk of severe illness. If you are eligible, you may receive a video consultation with a clinician. The service is available in English, Spanish, Haitian Creole and Portuguese. For more information and to request a telehealth consult, visit the state’s website.

This Saturday! Celebrate spring with a stroll through Needham Center, Needham Heights and other corners of Town during the Needham Sidewalk Stroll. This inaugural celebration will showcase the many local brick and mortar businesses that Needham has to offer.

There’ll be special promotions, live music, and some activities throughout the day. Check out the websites of the participating merchants and restaurants to see what they have planned. Visit the Charles River Chamber of Commerce’s website for more information.

Library Offers Summer Reading Challenge for All Ages

The Needham Free Public Library has a Summer Reading Program for everyone! Sign up now online, download the mobile Beanstack app or visit the library.

Adults use a Bingo card they can access on the Library’s website or in person. Log reading in Beanstack and earn entries into a prize drawing held every other week for each book read. Five books in a row on the Bingo card wins an extra raffle entry. Grand prizes will be awarded September 6th.

Young Adults earn raffle tickets by logging books read in Beanstack. Each book earns one ticket and a spin on the prize wheel. Tickets are drawn every two weeks for a chance to win gift cards from local businesses. Grand prize raffle at the end of the summer.

Children ages 4-11 receive a free book and a coupon to the USS Constitution for signing up and a coupon for a free ice cream for logging 8 hours of reading in Beanstack or on paper at the Library. Children who log 16 hours of reading by August 15th receive another free book and are entered in a Grand Prize drawing.

Adults read aloud to children ages 0-3 in the Early Literacy Summer Reading program and receive a free book and a USS Constitution pass for signing up. They receive a free ice cream coupon for logging 5 hours of reading and another free book for logging 10 hours.

  • 557 Highland Project: Thursday, May 12th and Thursday, May 19th, 7:30 pm
    Bulfinch affiliate 557 Highland, LLC hosts two community Zoom informational meetings to discuss the details of its proposed
    redevelopment of the Muzi site. Bulfinch is proposing a combination of uses such as office, research and development and life science with a small amount of ancillary retail space. Bulfinch has applied to the Needham Planning Board for a Special Permit for the project, to be known as the Needham Innovation Center. Click for Zoom info.

  • Paper Shredding and Paint Drop-off at the RTS, Saturday May 14th and Saturday, May 21st
    The Recycling and Transfer Station (RTS) hosts a paper shredding event at the Jack Cogswell Building (adjacent to the RTS) Saturday, May 14 from 9 am to 1 pm. The RTS also hosts a paint drop-day Saturday, May 21st 8 am to 3:30 pm.

  • Happening at the Needham Community Farm (NCF)

    • 2nd Annual Seedling Sale, Saturday, May 14th at 9:30AM at 1147 Central Avenue. The Needham Community Farm will have variety of vegetable and flower seedlings available. Visit early as they anticipate selling out.

    • The Buzz About Bees, Saturday, May 14th at 2:00PM at Needham Community Farm, 145 Pine Street. - Join NCF beekeeper Dana on the farm for a tour of our hives and an introduction to beekeeping. Family friendly, all ages welcome, youth under 14 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Event is FREE. Register here.

    • Native Plant Sale, Order today for pickup on Sat, May 21st. in Needham. Needham Community Farm, TBS Environmental Action Committee, and Green Needham are co-sponsoring a Native Plant Sale. Visit the website for more details.

  • Connections: Cops & Community Event, Tuesday, May 17th, 7 pm
    The second session of the 3-part discussion series “Connections: Cops & Community” will take place Tuesday, May 17th at 7 pm in Powers Hall at Town Hall. The event, “Exploring the Role and Impact of School Resource Officers,” focuses on youth and police interactions, with a particular focus on School Resource Officers.
