July Newsletter

Dear Readers,

Happy Summer! Indeed, it is summer and vacations and family gatherings are well on their way. Or, are they? What do you do when you have to adjust your plans based on numbers and factors that are outside your comfort zone? In the past, companies and families alike invested in one plan, now the wiser choice is to have the plan and then a solid plan B. Thankfully, we as a chapter did just that. Our mission is still the same but our venue has changed to online meetings to accommodate health concerns. Until we know that it’s safe to meet in person, we are leveraging our online presence and extending our impact to STC chapters across the nation. In addition, we are launching our new mentoring program to serve both new technical communicators and seasoned professionals.

In this newsletter, you will also find a call for volunteers and a critical message from our First VP.

Stay healthy, stay safe, and always stay curious.

Critical Chapter Update

We need your help!

We have two officer roles to fill urgently - First Vice President (VP) and Assistant Treasurer.

The STC Lone Star chapter has been an active chapter bringing you valuable programs, job opportunities, and networking with your tribe. But that is about to change because the chapter membership is fast declining and the volunteer base has all but disappeared. It is so dire that we may have to fold our chapter if we are unable to set up a succession plan.

We need a First Vice President and an Assistant Treasurer immediately for 2021. Without these roles filled, the chapter will have to either merge with another chapter or just fold at the end of 2021. We need your help NOW.

Would you be willing to step up?

We are here to set you up for success. We have the tools, documentation, and a team to help make tasks easier for you.

Our current treasurer, Beth Allphin, has been serving our chapter for almost three years. As she steps down at the end of 2020, we need an Assistant Treasurer who can shadow her. If you can balance a checkbook, you can be treasurer.

And if you are interested in the First VP role, you have the entire 2021 to shadow the President before you are at the helm in 2022. Generally speaking, the President decides the programming for their year. Our chapter has the team, the infrastructure, and the know-how to help and support the President host events and plan for their year of presidency. Think of the President as the steward and the Board that will help the President manage the events.

What is in it for you?

  • Build leadership skills.

  • Learn the different facets of running a chapter with a supportive team.

  • Experiment with different roles if you like.

  • Earn brownie points on your resume.

It is a win-win for you and us. This may be the ONE chance to give back to your tribe.

Please consider joining the chapter council. We look forward to hearing from you at

Zohra Mutabanna, Current First VP

Mentoring Program

Would you like to make a difference? If you said "yes," then we need you. We are looking for mentors who can work with technical communication students virtually for as little as an hour per week. Through this relationship, you can guide a young student to learn the right skills, provide guidance, and create future leaders. We are excited and we hope you can join our journey in shaping the careers of our next generation of writers. Send an email to if you are interested.

2020 CAA Awards

Our chapter was awarded the STC Platinum Community Award and we were also awarded the Most Improved Community of the Year Award!
