NEW Webinar Discussion from the ISAM Practice and Policy Interest Group (PPIG)

June 23rd, 2022    9-11 Eastern Standard Time

In recognition of the International Day Against the Use of Drugs & illicit Trafficking (June 26)
Is there any evidence supporting the observed polarization between abstinence and harm reduction oriented services

With precision medicine on the horizon and decades of advocating for person-centered services, the aim of this webinar is to have a focussed discussion on the evidence surrounding reasons why addiction  medicine services delivery is polarized towards abstinence or harm-reduction service philosophies, and why they may also be complementary toward one another.

We are excited to also let you know about free to educational modules from WPA!
Anyone can visit the World Psychiatric Association Education portal – create an account, then log in and access numerous education modules

The World Psychiatric Association is a global association representing 145 psychiatric societies in 121 countries, and bringing together more than 250,000 psychiatrists

Education is very much at the core of WPA’s vision of “a world where every person has safe access to professional and ethical mental health care”.  Whether it is the distribution of educational programs, the publication of educational texts or the organization and facilitation of meetings where knowledge-sharing is key, education underpins much of the work of the WPA.

Three areas of focus support WPA’s foundational goal of sharing practical skills and knowledge across the globe: using e-technology and tools to reach and educate more psychiatrists and their communities across the globe (especially in LAMIC); enhancing opportunities for face-to-face learning through the provision of travel grants and fellowships; and providing learning resources for patients, their caregivers and communities, and other key stakeholders.

NEW Pricing for online exam

The ISAM Certification Examination Editorial Board has made some exciting changes for 2022 onward.
In 2022 the exam will be offered for the first time Online.  This will occur on the same day as the in-person offering at the ISAM Annual Congress – on October 3, 2022.
There will be no fee change for 2022 but starting 2023 there will be a different fee for in-person sitting and for those doing the exam online.  The higher online rate is to cover the additional costs of offering the exam online: platform, technical support, and virtual proctoring across the time zones of the applicants.
We are very excited for this development and the opportunity it will provide for those wanting to take the exam and being able to save on the extra costs of airfare/travel, hotel and meals.
The exam is based on the ISAM textbook: el-Guebaly N, Galanter M, Carrà G, Baldacchino A. (Eds.).  Textbook of Addiction Treatment: International Perspectives 2nd ed., Vol I-II. Springer Nature, Switzerland, 2021
ISAM’s Certification of Addiction Medicine is a credentialing process that assures the public that the holder has the pre-requisite knowledge competence to practice in that field within the confines of his/her medical license. It was created to meet the needs of an international membership of practicing physicians for standardized, valid and affordable credentialing in addiction medicine.
This examination is a test of knowledge. While it does not certify clinical skill or competence, it does identify a physician who has demonstrated the degree of knowledge in the diagnosis and treatment of substance and other addictions commensurate with expertise in the field. To enhance access to the examination by an international audience, the following eligibility criteria were recommended:

Content Areas:
  1. Science/Clinical Foundations
  2. Drugs of Abuse and Pharmacotherapies
  3. Behavioural Approaches
  4. Systems Components in Treatment
  5. Policies and Training
  6. Behavioral Addictions
  7. Comorbid Medical Disorders
  8. Psychiatric Comorbidities
  9. Special Interest Populations
  10. Children, Adolescents & Young Adults

As of Nov 2021: 263 have passed the International Certification Examination from 26 countries.
