Nature's Way of Recycling

Making compost is nature's way of recycling organic materials back into the soil. According to the US EPA, yard waste and food scraps make up 20 to 30 percent of what we throw away. Backyard composting is a great way to recycle your yard and food waste. Composting keeps these materials out of landfills where they take up space and release methane, a potent greenhouse gas.

The three basic ingredients for composting are:
  • Browns- such as dead leaves, branches, and twigs
  • Greens- such as grass clippsing, vegetable waste, food scraps, and coffee grounds
  • Water- the right amount of water is important

Visit our Composting webpage for more information or contact your local Extension Agent to get started!
