California State Parks EIR Wins Awards

Road and Trail Change-in-Use EIR Wins
Environmental and Trails Planning Awards

California State Parks was faced with multiple proposals in park units around the state to add or remove an allowed use from existing state park roads or trails (most often involving the addition of mountain biking). This led to repetitive environmental reviews and sometimes contentious debates about how to accomplish both a use change and resource protection in an environmentally sensitive state park setting. In response, California State Parks devised and adopted an innovative planning and evaluation approach using a Program EIR to consistently, efficiently, and comprehensively evaluate impacts and require standard, environmentally protective features in the design of road or trail change-in-use projects. In recognition of its innovative efforts, the California State Parks Road and Trail Change-in-Use Evaluation Process Program EIR won two professional awards in March and April this year:

2014 Outstanding Environmental
Analysis Document

Association of Environmental Professionals

2014 Trail Planning Merit Award
California Trails and Greenways Conference

Congratulations to the team at California State Parks for receiving these awards! At Ascent, we greatly appreciate the opportunity to assist in the preparation of this Program EIR.
