Ways to Serve: Volunteer at the library

There are two ways to serve at Elkins Public Library. One opportunity is October 4 and the other is more long-term.

Book Sale Cleanup Monday, Oct. 10 at 3
At the end of every book sale, all the remaining books must be transported back to the library to be prepared for donation elsewhere. Volunteers are needed to help move the books on Tuesday, October 10, at 3p.m. The amount of work will depend on what and how many books are leftover after the sale. Please contact 479.531.1685 or jamie@jamiesnotebook.com if you are able to volunteer to help on October 10.

Book Re-shelving
The library also needs volunteers to help reshelve books and other light duties. This is ideal for a high school or college student needing to gain some community service hours. Contact the library at 479.643.2904 to learn more.

Elkins by the Numbers

Every month, the city department heads report their numbers for the previous month to the Elkins City Council. A summary of those reports is in our monthly newsletter.
All of the below numbers are from August and reported in September.

We do ask that you register online so that we have space prepared. The link to register as a vendor is available in the black banner on the district home page - elkinsdistrict.org.

Elkins memorabilia available through ECN

Would you like a commemorative Elkins t-shirt or mug? We worked with local graphic artist Nichole Williams at The Rustic Cub to create Elkins-themed merchandise that celebrates the 100-year anniversary of the Elkins one-lane bridge.

You can order two different size mugs and several different styles and colors of t-shirts from our website. ECN will receive a portion of your purchase to support our programs. Because of how the fundraising program works, mugs and shirts must be purchased separately.

We’ve bought some for our families and love the merchandise! Be aware that the T-shirts do run a little bit small so if you are between sizes, we suggest going up. You can purchase from our website support page (where we also list several other ways to support Elkins Community Network). That link is https://elkinsar.org/support/

Elkins Youth Football/Cheer Raffle

The Elkins youth football and cheer do a yearly raffle to help raise money for their programs. According to information from their Facebook page, ticket prices are $1/ticket or 25 tickets for $20. Community Insights:
Public Service: A Passion and a Calling

Our monthly Community Insights column features different voices from our immediate community and region. For the first few months, we are focusing on municipal service including municipal roles and the value that serving in various capacities within city government provides. In 2023, we will be petitioning insights into serving one’s community in a variety of different ways.

By Whitnee V. Bullerwell, Deputy Director of the Arkansas Municipal League

Public service is one of the most important contributions made at the municipal level of government—especially here in Arkansas. Not every municipality has enough municipal officials and personnel to accomplish every aspect of public service in their hometown. Many times, volunteers willing to serve the public are the reason events or initiatives are accomplished in a municipality.

To read more of Whitnee's thoughts on municipal community service, visit our blog.
