Deborah's Top Seven for 2011

It is the start of a new year and a new decade - the perfect opportunity to  focus our time and effort. Chris Brogan starts each year with three words that he focuses his energy around. They aren't goals - they are the focus. There is a difference. His words are more about changing his thinking and behavior.

Selecting three words for my business focus is number one priority on my top seven list this year. Here are the rest:

  1. Create and live by 3 words that reflect your focus and direction for the year.
  2. Focused social media participation. Have an account on LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter doesn't mean they are proactively working for your personal brand. This year the watchword is strategy.
  3. Learn something new. Each year we should expand our horizons by actively seeking out opportunities to learn something new. For me it will be how to create an app (see sidebar) - what will it be for you?
  4. Network outside my comfort zone. Do you find yourself attending the same meetings and lunches? This year - actively seek a local group through Meet up, LinkedIn Events or Twitter meet-ups that is meeting in your area where you will encounter new people.
  5. Generosity. We all have our favorite charities and organizations that we contribute to, however, this year you might consider mentoring as an additional way to use your experience and knowledge to pay it forward.
  6. Build Customer Relationships. You can't have a list for 2011 without including the customer; finding new ways to connect, communicate, uncover needs, exceed expectations and build relationships. How will you accomplish this in 2011?
  7. Write an e-book. I know - you aren't a writer, but you have so much knowledge and experience that can be shared and there are a plethora of tools available via the Internet that can help capture that knowledge in a resalable format (or use it as your generous gift and give it away.) But capture your expertise in written format and make it available to your prospects/customers/peers. Here are a couple links to get you started:

What is your focus for 2011? Remember the famous definition of insanity: "doing the same thing everyday and expecting different results." Hopefully your different approach for 2011 will bring you much success!

Happy New Year!

Do You Have an App?

2011 and beyond will see consumers using their mobile device (smart phone, iPad, etc) for all aspects of their life. As such, the development of mobile tags and mobile apps is on the rise.

I just found an app, Run Pee,  that will tell me when in the movie I can leave to use the bathroom, how many minutes I can be gone and what happens while I'm out of the theater.

I downloaded another app, Office Exercise, that allows me to use my cell phone as an exercise instructor and tool.

It's not too late to jump on the app-wagon.
