The Role of Competition in Healthy Divorces
with Bernie Mayer
We often think that building a cooperative parenting relationship is essential to co-constructive parenting, and it is —but so is competition. In fact, the capacity to compete constructively is essential to a cooperative approach to parenting. Drawing on the work in his newest book, The Conflict Paradox, Bernie Mayer will discuss why it is essential for parents to learn to compete, and how we can help them do so in a cooperative way.
Presenter: Bernie Mayer, Ph.D., Professor of Dispute Resolution, The Werner Institute, Creighton University, is a leader in the field of conflict resolution. Bernie has worked in child welfare, mental health, substance abuse treatment, and psychotherapy. Bernie is a founding board member of ACR and was a long time member (and board member) of the AFM. As a founding partner of CDR Associates, Bernie has provided conflict intervention for families, communities, universities, corporations, and governmental agencies throughout North America and internationally for over 35 years. Bernie’s latest book, The Conflict Paradox, Seven Dilemmas at the Core of Disputes, is just out (January, 2015). Earlier books include: The Dynamics of Conflict, Beyond Neutrality, and Staying With Conflict.
