Nurses say hospital “dangerous,” but CEO denies charge
Staffing problems in Humber River Regional Hospital’s two emergency departments make them “dangerous places” for patients, charges the union representing nurses who work there. More hospitals look to nocturnists to enhance patient care at night, on weekends
Nights and weekends can be dangerous times for patients, according to multiple studies. The most recent — one that tracked the outcomes of 30 million patients over a five-year period — showed that patients admitted to hospitals on weekends have a 10 percent higher death rate.
Forging a Partnership in Information Systems, The Case of Vancouver Hospital
...without capital investment to offset the nearly $48 million in efficiency improvements, more cuts are potentially dangerous, for the organizational infrastructure is down to its bare bones. At Vancouver Hospital we suffer from the reality that many of our facilities and much of our equipment is seriously old. Over 20 years ago, in 1978, the Laurel Redevelopment Plan outlined the need for replacement facilities at VGH, which was considered substandard even then.
The Whistle-Blower in Healthcare
Dangerous practices, ineffective policies and marginal procedures in healthcare may lead to poor patient outcomes. As seen with SARS, contagious disease can spread rapidly from hospitals and immobilize entire healthcare systems and economies. Safety in the healthcare institution requires monitoring of the workplace as well as the continuous improvement of medical procedures and practices. With the reports of hospital-transmitted disease, such as SARS, and antibiotic-resistant bacteria being propagated into the general communities, hospital safety is becoming a public health issue.
