New Edition of Popular Series Offers a Treasure Trove of High Interest Readings

Is there always a need for more reading books with genuinely high interest reading? Yes, yes and yes! And so we are happy to announce that the third edition of the Reading for the Real World series is available and does not disappoint!
Example topics are Gamers: Image and Reality, Bounty Hunters, Xenotransplantation and Space Tourism.

This is a four-level series designed for intermediate to advanced level students. Developing reading skills is the primary goal, but a secondary goal is assisting students in acquiring the New Academic Word List (NAWL) in context.

An access code for a website and mobile app is included with each book. The app allows students to get more practice with vocabulary, reading, and writing activities for each unit as well as providing audio recordings of all the readings. Teachers can use the app to set up and manage their classes, view student progress, download answer keys and more.

More Reading with Power Reading!

With the days getting shorter, the weather getting cooler and buffoons being elected to public office, now seems like a good time to encourage more reading.... and Power Reading is a good book to use with intermediate to advanced ESL learners.
This is a three-level series with an emphasis on reading, but with exrta power given in the form of skills and systems work across the board. The readings are, in other words, accompanied by writing, listening, speaking, grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation practice. And, once again, the topics are pretty high on the interest-level scale.

# Winning!

We have always prided ourselves on quality and innovation of the publications that we distribute and we are very pleased to announce that a number of the titles in our catalog have recently been nominated for awards.
Not one but three of Delta Publishing's titles have been shortlisted for the ESU English Language Award in the Resources for Teachers category:
  1. Film in Action by Kieran Donaghy - a practical guide to using film in the classroom.
  2. Speaking Games by Jason Anderson - photocopiable activities to make language learning fun.
  3. Teaching Children How to Learn by Gail Ellis and Nayr Ibrahim - a major resource offering teachers a practical new methodology.
Helbling Languages, publisher of American Jetstream, has also been shortlisted for the ESU award in the category of Resources for Young Learners. The Thinking Train, a new series of graded readers for young learners has received this prestigious nomination. The Thinking Train was also nominated for the ELTons awards 2016, and one of the titles in the series, A Problem for Prince Percy, was finalist in the ERF - Language Learner Literature Award 2016.

Welcome to Liz Lee, our new Senior ESL Specialist in Texas!

We are honored and thrilled that Liz is bringing her considerable knowledge and experience to our team. Liz has many years of experience in teacher training and consulting with teachers on educational materials.
Please read more about Liz on our website. If you are in Texas, we hope you will shoot Liz an email to say hello!

And Welcome to Calin and Silvino!

We have just added two fabulous new members to our team in our head office. Calin Stefan (left) began with us as an intern, but he impressed us so much that we ended his internship after just two weeks to make him a permanent member of our staff. Calin is our new Marketing and Sales Coordinator and brings a lot of fresh ideas, organization and helpfulness to the position. Calin will be (amongst other things) coordinating with program directors on their textbook needs and playing a central role in our marketing campaigns.

Silvino Luiz Schuler Sieben (right) has an awfully long name (we call him Sil) but he is proving to be a fantastic addition to the English Central team. Sil was an ESL teacher and director of studies in his native Brazil for many years. Last year he came to Canada and decided that he was ready for not just a new home, but a new direction in his career as well. We are lucky that he found us, because he brings an understanding of teaching as well as a helpful attitude to the position of Office and Customer Service Manager.
Find us in Boston this weekend, where we will be attending the inaugural MATESOL PLS/IEP Mini-Conference.The week after, Carrie (along with Alex from Express Publishing, one of the newer publishers in our catalog) will be in San Diego for the annual CATESOL conference. Find us and come say hi!

If you have overdosed on TED Talks or are simply up for some other source of intelligent content, check out The School of Life channel on YouTube - for your own enjoyment or to use in class... or both!
This has nothing do do with teaching or ESL, it is just and interesting thought to reflect on from Immanuel Kant (1724 - 1804):

Every man is to be respected as an absolute end in himself; and it is a crime against the dignity that belongs to him to use him as a mere means to some external purpose.
