Research Says English Through Drama Works

There are plenty of ESL teachers out there who have acting in their blood and therefore are keen to use drama techniques in the classroom. However, ALL teachers should take note of this: a research team at Brock University recently found that students' English  fluency and comprehensibility are drastically increased when drama and theatre techniques are used in the language classroom (see media release for more details).

It must be kismet, because just as we came this research report, Helbling Languages new teacher resource, English Through Drama arrived!
English Through Drama presents a clear introduction to using drama activities with all ages, stressing its importance for the education of the whole learner. Teachers are shown how to encourage their students, whatever their difficulties, to develop social, physical, cognitive, creative and emotional skills as well as language skills.

English Through Drama includes a brief review of all relevant research and theory to provide a solid base for the practical and inspiring activities which follow. A chapter on classroom management in active challenging classrooms offers advice on how to foster an inclusive and protective learning environment and move from "I can't..." to "I can!".

50 Steps to Improving your Grammar will be arriving in stock later this month. We are excited about this because 50 Steps to Improving your Academic Writing (same author and publisher) is a great resource and we assume that this book will be too.... we won't know for sure until we see it, though! Stay tuned; we will have more information in next month's newsletter.

Successful Launch of Jetstream at TESOL Baltimore

Thank you to Jeremy Harmer, Helbling Languages and the 300+ people who came to Jeremy's presentations at TESOL Baltimore. We gave out hundreds of copies of Jetream and we have gotten some great feedback. Here are some things attendees have said about Jetstream:

I like that it doesn't underestimate the reader's intelligence even though the idea is language skills. Asking terribly obvious questions can seem pedantic and make people less likely to want to interact with the materials.

It is student-centered with interesting topics students can relate to.

Great vocabulary acquisition strategies.

Emphasis on collaborative/communicative activities and using authentic dialogue to learn English (student experience, ideas, and interest).

Take a Tour of Jetstream

Alastair Graham-Marr, publisher and author at Abax, talks to us about the new EAP series, Academic Listening and Speaking.

An interesting read across the board, but of particular interest to teachers working with lower-level EAP students and how to help them with their particular challenges.

Well, as the weather warms up, the number of events for teachers winds down. That is the sad fact of summer - teachers have fewer opportunities to get their geek on. We have only two to report this month: a free webinar for teachers seeking work-life balance (always a nice idea) on May 11th and the annual TESL Toronto conference, May 27 -28.
