Entrust NewsFlash
A transformational Wall Street event occurred in honor of International Women's Day. State Street Global Advisors, one of the world's largest asset managers, took a stand and adopted a trailblazing policy: going forward, they will work with institutions who share their commitment to gender diversity on boards. In other words, institutions and organizations that do not choose to diversify their boards will no longer be able to do business with State Street Global Advisors.

We applaud this response to the results of the research of countless individuals and institutions across America, who have identified and promoted the benefits of gender diversity on boards. Benefits include: stronger financial performance, better employee attendance and morale at work, and fewer governance-related issues such as bribery, corruption, shareholder battles, and fraud.

Our Entrust commitment to this important transformation is exemplified by our holistic approach to providing financial services. Using a holistic approach means concentrating on all facets of personal finance that contribute to financial well-being. Our approach begins with astute investment planning–the traditional focus of financial services–but then continues, addressing financial concerns that go beyond investing. Generally speaking, good portfolio performance is the end-game for men (women also expect good investment performance); but when women are at the table, they want more. They want to know what their money can do for them. For instance, women are interested in planning for: care for a special needs child when he becomes an adult, the purchase of a vacation home, college tuitions for children or grandchildren, aging parents, maintaining their style of living in retirement, or legacy gifts to a favorite charity.

Investment Committee Updates
The term “alternative investments” is generally used to describe a wide variety of investment strategies that share a particular investment objective. This objective is to take positions in investments other than the publicly traded stocks and bonds that most investors hold in their portfolios. For example, investors may have access to a menu of investments such as: private real estate investment trusts, business development companies, and private equity offerings. Strategies such as real estate investment trusts and business development companies are geared toward income generation and capital preservation; private equity offerings, on the other hand, are designed for growth of capital.

At Entrust we are interested in alternative strategies that tend to have low correlation to the stock and bond markets and therefore may provide enhanced diversification within portfolios. Our investment committee is tasked with carefully vetting the alternative investment managers responsible for the alternative investments we are considering for client portfolios. Contact us if you would like to learn more about alternative strategies.

There are risks associated with investing, including the risk of loss of principal. There is no assurance that a diversified portfolio will result in better returns than an undiversified portfolio, nor does diversification assure against market loss.
