A Workshop Series

Addressing urban issues is crucial for solving grand societal and planetary challenges in the contemporary world. JPI Urban EuropeSTART and ICLEI Africa invite you to join our upcoming workshop series aimed at developing visions on just, sustainable and livable urban areas in Africa, discussing the pathways to make those visions a reality and how international cooperation can support local urban transitions.

Season 2 of the STARTcast. START's podcast for early- and mid-career scientists, continues! This season is all about the Future Resilience for African Cities and Lands (FRACTAL) project, with particular focus on transdisciplinary approaches used to support resilience and adaptation decision making in nine southern African cities. Episodes 1-3 are available now.

Youth in Climate Information Dissemination: A Q&A with Francis Awaafo Akugre on Youth Activities with the DigitAL Project


In June 2021, START organized an Advanced Institute (AI) for 45 early and mid-career researchers from Burkina Faso, Senegal and Morocco.


START is pleased to highlight a recent paper published in Geophysical Research Letters entitled Urbanization Magnified Nighttime Heat Waves in China that documents an increase in the occurrence and severity of nighttime heat waves across China over a 37-year period. 

The Sustainable Urbanisation Global Initiative (SUGI) Food Water Energy Nexus approach provides a unique collaboration framework for technical and social scientists, small and large businesses, cities and non-governmental organisations, to tackle the urban challenges of food, energy and water nexus. START is supporting three African institutions to participate on international teams to develop solutions for this challenge. Read their blog posts below:

In May, START partnered with Educational Partnerships for Innovation in Communities (EPIC) and UNEP’s Global Adaptation Network to deliver a workshop on applying the EPIC approach in Asian cities. The 3-day virtual workshop featured pairs of university faculty and local government officials from 32 Asian cities. Following from the workshop, START will offer seed grants to 11 of the university-city pairs that will allow them to begin applying the EPIC approach to addressing adaptation and resilience needs within local contexts.

Exploring Potential Future of Runoff Catchments for Collaborative Adaptation in Koutiala, Mali

On July 9, 2021, Co-FARM team members convened a semi-virtual stakeholder engagement event at the offices of Association Malienne d'Éveil au Développement Durable (AMEDD) in Koutiala, Mali. The purpose of this event was to update the community on the experiences with the BCERs (Bassin de Collecte des Eaux de Ruissellement) that are the focus of the Co-FARM project, as well as other BCERs in the region of Koutiala and surrounding areas.

In order to keep the GOFC Regional Networks vibrant and active during this COVID period, START and the Global Observation of Forest Cover and Land Dynamics (GOFC-GOLD) program planned and hosted a series of virtual Regional Network meetings.


START provides opportunities for training, research, education and networking that strengthen scientific skills and inspire leadership for advancing solutions to critical sustainability challenges.
