A Labour of Love 10 years in the Making

Dear friends,

Back to School – that is the theme here in Canada this month and our theme at SchoolBOX. Ten years ago, Tom Affleck gave those two little girls the notebooks and pencils that allowed them to go to school. The decade following has been quite the journey 'Making Education Possible', a labour of love, championed by Ronald Chavarria and Jazmin Lopez in Nicaragua and a community of thousands in Canada and around the world. Together, we opened our 80th classroom last week outside Masaya, Nicaragua, and opened the door for a new generation of kids to have the opportunity to go to school!

While we head back to school in Canada, we head into graduation season in Nicaragua. We are celebrating with thousands of kids at our 96 partner schools; kids like Robinson, a little 11-year old boy who hadn’t even finished grade one when we began building his rural community a school five years ago. Robinson has persevered, and this year, at age 16, he is going to be finishing his elementary school, against all odds.

In celebration of our 10th Birthday, we are launching our first project in Canada: a new library for a Treaty 3 school in need in northern Ontario. So many new adventures in ‘Making Education Possible’ are ahead! Thank you for being a part of this mission and for continuing to believe in the power of education, to spark hope and to empower kids to defeat poverty and reach their dreams.

With heartfelt thanks, muchas gracias,

Sarah Kerr and the SchoolBOX family
80th Classroom Built!

On September 5th, 2016, students and teachers near Masaya, Nicaragua inaugurated a new classroom at Gilberto Siles School, and SchoolBOX celebrated the completion of our 80th classroom since we began ‘Making Education Possible’ in 2006.

The community members and children were finally able to realize their dream of a dignified place for their children to attend classes.

Over the past ten years at SchoolBOX, we have witnessed communities and children’s lives be transformed by the power of education. We are so humbled by the support we receive from generous volunteers and donors, like the Union of Solicitor General Employees, that funded the new classroom at Gilberto Siles School.

We look forward to celebrate more milestones in education in the years to come!
Brett #5 'Mirna Martinez'
School Complete

The completion of the Brett #5 'Mirna Martinez' School this August is a testament to the amazing work of SchoolBOX heroes and champions.

Recognizing that the children in her community needed a place to learn, Mirna Martinez gave up parts of her house to hold classes for students, and then donated her own land as the site of a new school.

Brett Bentley Crawford was an amazing woman whose light continues to shine in the lives of thousands of children who attend schools built in her memory. Brett’s legacy demonstrates the impact that one life can have on the lives of many, making the Brett #5 “Mirna Martinez” School all the more significant.

At the inauguration ceremony, community members of the Valle de las Americas gathered to celebrate their new school made possible by the dream of Mirna Martinez and the generosity and fundraising of the Brett Bentley Crawford Foundation.
Books 4 Kids Program in Full Force

September and October are busy months for our SchoolBOX Nicaragua team as they travel to another 18 of our partner communities to host Reading Days, create reading rooms in seven schools and deliver 14 new mini libraries!

During Reading Days, parents, teachers and students participate in reading games, story telling, singing and dancing that promote a love of reading. Making reading fun and entertaining for kids fosters a life-long appreciation of books and provides encouragement to continue their studies.

In addition to hosting a total of 50 Reading Days in 2016, SchoolBOX will have provided 16 new mini libraries and eight reading rooms this year through our Books 4 Kids program.
Thanks to Our
Amazing Volunteers!

This was a busy season of partnerships between SchoolBOX and our international volunteers! This summer we welcomed four groups of enthusiastic volunteers, and we are set for another this fall.
