SELF CARE
Lying on a deck chair by the sea, I read two books over the last two days after a little hiking detour in the Alps. One: Annie Ernaux's A Woman's Story, the other: The Delusions of Care by Bonaventure Soh Bejeng Ndikung. The two books are related in a peculiar way: While one describes, if only indirectly, any absence of self-care, or limits (perhaps must limit) it to the struggle of an individual's class advancement in postwar France, the other emphasizes (among other things) the caring treatment of oneself as an absolute prerequisite for creating a more just world. Bonaventure Ndikung, in the chapter Detecting/Distilling Care in Curating/the Curatorial, focuses on the importance of care in curating. He desires "Art spaces [...] [as] spaces of radical thinking. Of radical love. Of protest. [...]" and asks "how can we create spaces where people and society can show their wounds?" I also think about this as I look out to sea and hope that I "will be able to carry" on after these weeks of retreat.

Talk:
'Zazise' by Zanele Muholi
July 27th / 6:30 p.m.
While I bake in the sun and think about further stations of my SUMMER BREAK, the small vacation intermezzo is already approaching. Next Tuesday I have the honor to guide through the exhibition Zazise at the Sprengel Museum in Hannover together with Inka Schube, who curated the exhibition together with Zanele Muholi. We will talk about corporeality and fashion in the photographs of Zanele Muholi and for this I am happy to interrupt my vacation. Talk unfortunately only in German.

Talk:
Talking Objects. Of Narrative Objects and Collection Narratives
On July 07, Isabel Raabe and I had the pleasure of talking via lifestream with Azu Nwagbogu about, among other things, the Home Museum Lagos he co-founded - a private collection of photographs gathered through an open call as part of the LagosPhoto Festival. In addition, we discussed how collections can bring objects into narrative. Whose story do the objects tell? What is the relationship between the narratives and the narrative of the collections? And can this relationship be changed when collections are created through collective processes?
The conversation can be viewed here.
