From the General Manager
By Garland McQueen,
PNFC General Manager

Over the next few months, I look forward to working with the staff and owners of the Placerville Natural Foods Co-op and I want it known that everyone I have met has been welcoming and ready to do what is best for our Co-op. Plus, the weather is much preferred over the climate of my last Co-op located in upstate Minnesota.
We have a wonderful Co-op that has struggled to gain traction in the area of profitability and with a few changes and some guidance, I think we can turn the tide and continue the road to sustainable profitability.
You may have already seen some of the minor changes within our Co-op and there are more to come. In the future, there will be additional benefits for the owners and other methods to encourage non-members to become an owner. As our success depends upon the loyalty of our owners and staff, we should make every effort to let our community know what is available to them. We do not wish to be “Placerville’s best kept secretâ€.
Some of the changes are: Some new sandwiches in Deli, new artisan cheeses, some product re-location, and some lower prices; yes, I did say lower prices and more to come.
On March 13th, we will be having a Member Appreciation Day. This will be a day of special events, new product offerings, samplings, raffles, and other good stuff. Friday, the 13th could be your lucky day.

From the Board
By John Le Pouvoir,
President, PNFC Board of Directors

|
I hope by now many of you, our owners, have had a chance to meet the Co-op’s new interim General Manager, Garland Mcqueen. Your Board of Directors reviewed our Co-op’s performance and consulted with other Co-ops, financial advisors, and grocery industry experts. Based on the input we received, we decided to employ Garland, an expert with lots of experience in helping struggling organizations to reach profitability. Garland will be with us for six months, and in that time the board will closely monitor or situation and formulate a plan for continuing growth of sales and sustainability. Your board expects to see measurable improvement in the Co-op, and we will report to you as we progress.
If you really want your Co-op to thrive, there a few things you can do to contribute to our success:
- Shop the Co-op
- If your shares are not fully paid, consider paying your remaining amount, or as much as you can, the next time you visit.
- If you have the resources, consider making a loan to the Co-op. Ask at the store or contact a board member for details of the loan program.
- Make a gift to the Co-op.

Are you a business owner as well as a co-op owner? We are putting together a directory of our co-op owner/members who are also business owners. If you would like to have your business listed in this directory, please fill out one of the forms found inside the store. This directory will likely be available online through our website and possibly in printed format as well. We will also soon have a business card display rack inside the store for the purpose of advertising for and supporting those who support us! There are forms in the front of the store for those who are interested in advertising their businesses in either of these two ways.
Be sure to attend our OWNER/MEMBER APPRECIATION DAY ON MARCH 13TH, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.
