FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

Dear Valued Placerville Food Co-op Customers,

It is with great thought and consideration that we have decided to convert our deli hot bar to a self-serve organic salad bar.

We have enjoyed serving warm food for many years but feel there is an immediate need for an organic salad bar in our county. This change will enable us to offer more fresh, local, organic, and healthful foods to our community. We plan to offer many local, in-season, and certified organic products.

Our grocery and produce sales continue to climb at incredible rates, that tells us that our customers want what we want - to have access to healthful foods as much and as often as possible.

We will continue to offer daily soups as well as our breakfast burritos, salads, sandwiches, and specialty salads. We plan to introduce a panini press to make hot sandwiches (spring of 2018).

Thank you for your support during our transition. As always, please contact me directly should you have any questions or comments.

FROM THE BOARD

The year 2017 has seen your Co-op finally achieving sustainability and solid progress. This is not to say that there have been no struggles, but overall the environment of the business has improved and recent favorable economic times have seemed to contribute to growing success.

Thank you to Regina Grosby, who accepted the challenge of managing the Co-op in July of 2016 and has since then assembled and led a team of hardworking and committed folks to move the business in a positive direction.

We have learned some valuable lessons along the way about what kind of store best serves the community. We have put more emphasis on being a source of food; the kind of food that is wholesome, affordable and sustainably grown or produced. We have tried to feature locally grown organic produce and other local products.

I have served on the Board of Directors for over three years, most of that time as the board president. My tenure has been frequently challenging, often frustrating, sometimes satisfying and always full of the rewards of working with others who share the belief that cooperative enterprise can contribute to the vitality of a community. My thanks go to  my fellow board members this past year: Robynn Paxton-Katz, Doug Speakman, Craig Thomas, Ben Hanson, Andrea Crimmins, Angie Patton Carocci and Jorden Mingle; as well as those who served with me in the past. I am sure that the Co-op will continue to grow and prosper under the guidance of the new board as it assumes office in January.

I wish all our owners a happy holiday season and prosperous new year and I extend my thanks to all of you, loyal owners, who continue to support your store by shopping the Co-op and by volunteering to assist with projects and community outreach events. Please join me in lending your continuing support to this, our community enterprise. Remember: You Own It!

Yours in cooperation,

John Le Pouvoir

President

On November 14, 2017 our Board of Directors approved our revised Mission and Ends Statements. Now, we know that mission statements are often unread - probably because they're too vague or generic. Please take a moment to read ours as they sum up the co-op's values and goals in a few sentences.  They are meant to inspire and direct the work we do. They give our board members, managers, staff and owners a shared vision and a simplified way to hold each other accountable.

Some of these goals are quite lofty but we're up to the challenge. We also want to let our community know how our cooperative differs from other business models.

We hope our new statements resonate with you in some way and encourage you to take an interest in all of the hard work we do at (y)our coop!

Without further ado...

The following statements are the fundamental principles that drive the work we do at the Co-op.

MISSION STATEMENT

Placerville Food Co-op is a community-owned grocery store that is committed to strengthening our local economy. The co-op demonstrates that economic success can coincide with a “triple bottom line” approach that combines social, environmental, and economic values (or “people, planet, profit”).  We strive to inspire others to do the same.

ENDS STATEMENT

As a result of the work we do:

  1. Our community will have access to high quality, reasonably priced food, with an emphasis on local, organic, minimally processed, and ethically produced goods.

  2. Owners and shoppers will be informed about cooperative principles and values, as well as current environmental, food and consumer issues.

  3. We will provide meaningful employment with opportunities for participation and growth to employees who are partners in achieving our goals.

  4. There will be collaborative relationships with organizations in the community to achieve shared goals.

COOPERATOR OF THE MONTH

Help us congratulate Haley as our Co-operator of the Month. Haley has worked at PFC since 2015. She started as a cashier and is now our Center Store Lead, which means she oversees all of grocery, chill, frozen, and pretty much everything you see on our shelves.
PFC staff had great things to say about her:
"She does everything!"
"Because she's all the radical things in the coop universe!"
"She is amazing! She works so hard and has put in so much time and effort into making the co-op what it is today!"
