TOL runs a program funded by the Open Society Foundations (OSF) designed to train journalists and to write on education topics with the aim to raise public awareness on education issues around the world. As part of the project, we issue a bi-monthly newsletter including news provided by the Education Support Program (ESP) of the Open Society Foundations and by partners from the Open Society Education Network (OSEN).
Warsaw’s schools under the restitution ax

They survived war, communism, and transition, but a new threat looms. Warsaw’s nurseries, kindergartens, and schools are becoming collateral damage in unresolved property disputes that democratic Poland has failed to address for 25 years. For a casual walker in Warsaw, the changes are likely imperceptible: school sports grounds suddenly fenced off from an adjacent school building, another school apparently on the move from one building to another.
Bosnia’s different truths

The fighting ended long ago, but it would be a stretch to say the country is at peace. Today, when you ask people in my country if they live in peace, most will answer that they do. But if I defined a state of peace as freedom and a sense of security, I suspect they would answer negatively. They equate peace with the fact that there is no active fighting, but to be a peaceful nation where there is harmony and accord among people is another matter.
Integration later

A Hungarian court says a church-run school in a Romani community segregates. Its backers says it offers a head start.The Soja Miklos Elementary School sits in the middle of a Romani settlement in this city in northeastern Hungary. All of its students are poor, and most are Roma. In February a Nyiregyhaza court said that amounted to segregation. 
Citizenship education in the Netherlands

The SIRIUS European Policy Network on the education of children and young people with a migrant background held an international conference in Brussels last month. One of the workshops planned for the Brussels conference was on citizenship education. In 2013 SIRIUS produced a comparative report on citizenship education in European countries with a focus on the general outlines of the national policy. In a paper prepared for a workshop on citizenship education we went a step further and focused on the implementation of the Dutch policy.
Catholics first?

A right-wing fringe blogger ignites debate in Poland over the role of personal religious faith in public education. A religious pilgrimage site doesn’t seem the likeliest place for the start of an educational controversy. But when a group of doctors chose to make a public â€œDeclaration of Faith” from the historic Jasna Gora monastery in June, the Czestochowa landmark became linked with a movement to encourage Catholic professionals in Poland to place the strictures of their faith over secular ethics.
In Georgia’s schools, a little privatization on the side

The widespread use of private tutors feeds inequality and possibly corruption. Third in an occasional TOL series.
Giorgi Gocitashvili, a 19-year-old high school student, says the education he received at a private school in Tbilisi’s Saburtalo district wasn’t enough to ace the university entrance exams. 
REF grantees recognized with three Roma integration awards from the European Commission

Three grantees of the Roma Education Fund (REF) received top prizes for their innovative work at the European Commission’sRoma Integration Award Ceremony in October. Among the four REF-supported nominees competing for recognition â€“ Kosovo’s Voice of Roma, Ashkali and Egyptians NGO provides educational services, FYR Macedonia’s Ambrela focuses on social inclusion and education, Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Otaharin concentrates on training programs, and Serbia’s CSO Hands of Friendship runs toy libraries and Mothers’ Clubs â€“ three won awards.
History educators finalized a new multi-perspective teaching resource on sensitive and controversial history in the Western Balkans 1900-1945

The latest EUROCLIO collaborative educational publication “Once Upon A Time … We Lived Together: Joint Work in a Multi-perspective Approach” is now available in 8 languages, for free in full, downloadable PDF Book format. It contains 23 innovative exemplar (active learning) workshops focusing on some of the most sensitive and controversial topics of regional history between 1900-1945.

Creative center for boosting children’s language and math skills opened in Skopje, Macedonia

The Foundation for Education and Cultural Initiatives “Step by Step” – Macedonia opened the first Children’s Creative Center for fostering early-grade language and math literacy. It is the first activity and resource center in the country that enables students to engage in reading and math activities, with the help of their parents and teachers. It is a modern, stimulating and child-friendly environment covering a surface of almost 1.000 m2, where young learners can into a reading and math adventure.
