Patient safety in pharmacy: share & learn!

Patient safety is really important in any pharmacy and any improvements benefit you and your patients and customers.

One of the best ways to improve is by sharing experiences and learning from each other, and we’re keen to help Greater Manchester pharmacies do just that.

We’re looking for examples e.g. how you’ve learnt from an incident or from other pharmacies, where you’ve changed practice, what you’ve found useful in improving patient safety.

All information will be anonymised (unless you tell us you’re happy to be named) so you can share it in confidence.  Just email emer.scott@gmlpc.org.uk or call 0161 228 6163.

We’re also running a webinar on patient safety on 15th May – look out for more details soon!

We love your AMR & health promotion ideas!

We’re so impressed by the creative flair of your antimicrobial resistance and other health promotion displays that we’re creating a gallery on our website. These are some examples from Tims & Parker, Rowlands and Manor Pharmacy. Share your pictures by emailing emer.scott@gmlpc.org.uk.

Job Opportunity with Public Health England

Public Health England want to appoint a pharmacist who is passionate about physical activity and can communicate that enthusiasm while training health professionals across the North West.

It’s for a new role of Pharmacist Clinical Champion for Physical Activity one day a week (0.2wte) from 1st May. The successful candidate needs to be confident presenting and speaking in public as they will be training fellow health professionals on ways of promoting the benefits of exercise and incorporating conversations into everyday clinical practice.

This draft job description explains more. It’s part of a national programme. If you’re interested, please send a CV and covering letter explaining why you’d like the role to adam.irvine@gmlpc.org.uk as soon as possible.

Resources for Be Clear on Cancer

You can now pre-order free resources including posters and leaflets from Public Health England for the Be Clear on Cancer respiratory symptoms campaign that relaunches on 18th May. Greater Manchester Diabetes Partnership

Pharmacists are playing an active role in Greater Manchester Diabetes Partnership, a joint programme between the NHS Greater Manchester and Lancashire Strategic Clinical Network and the pharmaceutical industry, represented by ABPI. It aims to improve Type 2 diabetes support and outcomes - and to reduce variations in care across Greater Manchester - by developing a holistic plan and pathway, including lifestyle advice, structured education and enhancing healthcare professionals' skills.

The partnership has produced an update for community pharmacists, explaining more about its work to date, future plans and how the partnership aims to enhance support for people with Type 2 diabetes. Read it here.

CPPE: What's New in BNF 73?

The Centre for Pharmacy Postgraduate Education (CPPE) has released What’s new in BNF 73, a distance learning programme to accompany the 73rd edition of the BNF.

What’s new in BNF 73? contains ten case studies, which will allow pharmacy professionals to locate information on changes in the latest BNF, identify situations in a healthcare setting where the management of a patient is affected by these changes, and recommend appropriate courses of action. This interactive PDF is available for the whole pharmacy team, and will show how new recommendations and information in the BNF will affect clinical practice.

REMINDER - Don't Miss Out !
North Manchester: Electronic Repeat Dispensing (eRD) Project
North Manchester Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and Greater Manchester Local Pharmaceutical Committee (GM LPC) are working in collaboration to deliver an Electronic Repeat Dispensing (eRD) Project across North Manchester.

Two training events for community pharmacies have taken place already in February 2017 and we are putting on a final training event for
Tuesday 18th April for those pharmacies that didn't and couldn't attend the previous events.

The project will be rolled out in the next few weeks and we highly recommend those pharmacies who couldn't make the previous  events to make every effort to attend. We will be visiting all the GP practices in North Manchester over the next few months and need your support in identifying suitable, eligible patients to be switched to eRD. We believe this will be beneficial for everyone including the patients and will allow you better control of your repeat prescriptions; more opportunity to engage with your patients; and showcase your value in the management of repeat prescriptions.

Please click here to book your place.
