Job opportunities: NZSL@School project

The Ministry of Education and the Combined Board of Trustees for Kelston and van Asch Deaf Education Centres are currently advertising for three roles within their new NZSL@School project team. These positions are full-time fixed term positions for the period of February to September 2015. The Project Administrator position is based in Wellington.The two Project Team members are able to be based at their home location.

If you did not teach taster classes last year you will need to complete the online form then send us your CV and a NZSL video explaining why you want to be a tutor. The video is for us to assess your NZSL skills. Contact your local Community Relations Officer for assistance.

Tutors will be required to attend unpaid training sessions between March and April.

Video Remote Interpreting

VRI will be available usual hours over the Christmas holidays with the exception of Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Day and the day after New Year.

Please note however that this is still only for the agencies involved and who are set up: ACC, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Health and Ministry of Social Development.

South Auckland

Coca-Cola Christmas in the Park

Last Saturday the Deaf community attended the Christmas at the Park event in Auckland. Deaf Aotearoa Community Relations Officers Rachel Berry and Natasha Cloete, and the Community Relations Team Leader Lisa Alexander set up an interpreter stage close to the front of the big stage. For the last few years, the weather had been good but last Saturday it was so wet and rainy, everyone were under umbrellas. But it didn't stop us having fun! We still had so much fun there.

Sun Smart and TEC courses for 2015

On Tuesday 16th December we had our Sun Smart event. A lady from the Cancer Society came to talk to us. It was very informative, covering topics how to protect yourself from sun rays such as UVA, UVB and UVR because it will sunburn you even if it is a cloudy day. They showed how dangerous the sun is. Did you miss out? Do you want us to organise another Sun Smart event?

For any TEC courses if you have any ideas to have courses you want to attend for 2015 based at Deaf Aotearoa South Auckland please let me know.

End of Year Celebration – Shared Lunch

On Wednesday 10th December, the Deaf Aotearoa Hamilton office had their end of year celebration shared lunch. It was a great afternoon, chatting, eating, sharing ideas and finishing off the Christmas tree.
We would like to thank all of those that came and made it a great way to finish off the year. We are looking forward to a positive, productive 2015, full of participation, motivation and fun! We wish you all a safe and happy holiday break.

TSB Bank Festival of Lights

This year the TSB Bank Festival of Lights begins on Sunday 14th December and ends on Saturday 24th January 2015.

Summer Scene is the daytime activities and events programme for children and families that includes scavenger hunts, beach digs, fun sporting events and magician shows.

You can visit your Work and Income branch and ask them to put your name down for seasonal work. Remember if you see any job advertising please do apply straight away and don’t wait.

Workbridge funding

Remember to make sure that you have funding in your name for interpreter bookings for your work.
  1. If you are already working and do have regular meetings, you need an interpreter then you need to fill out “Job Support Fund” form.
  2. If you are not working and looking for work, if you have an interview you can have an interpreter but you need to apply for “Training Support Fund” first before you book an interpreter.
If you need either one of these you need to do this now and it can take about a month before any fund available and before you allow to book an interpreter.

Napier's annual New Year's Eve celebration is brought to you by Napier City Council and Hawke's Bay Today. The concert begins at 8.30pm and the evening will conclude with The Hits 89.5 Fireworks display just after midnight.

This year the concert will feature the ever-popular Tina Cross with support artists Leon Wharekura and Sharon Emirali. This is a free, family-safe, liquor free, smoke free, community celebration which has grown over the past 15 years to be one of the bigger outdoor events held in the region.

Shirley McKenzie Scholarship

Each year we offer this scholarship, the amount varies every year.

This is only awarded once a year to more than one applicant.

What is this award? It is to support Deaf people with training that will contribute to welfare, education or wellbeing of other Deaf people.

The toothpaste Christmas tree

Nelson Dental Department at the local hospital got into the Christmas festive mood, great to see them being so resourceful with their toothpastes and toothbrushes.

Deaf Society of Canterbury are looking for a new staff member to replace Nadia’s position as Community and Event Co-ordinator in the New Year 2015 and it will be a part time position (40 hours a month).

Deaf Senior Citizens Canterbury’s 25th Anniversary

Canterbury’s Deaf Senior Citizens are having their 25th anniversary during the weekend of 24th to 26th April 2015 and their programme will be sent out soon once it is confirmed.
