Christmas Message from Deaf Aotearoa

We’re now coming to the end of the year, looking back it’s been a really busy but very successful year. There’s been lots of changes and these have been really positive changes.

I’d like to thank you for your support through it all, your support has been really good.

Northland

Deaf Aotearoa Office Holiday Closure

Christmas is near! That means the Northland office will be closing very soon! Deaf Aotearoa will be closed for three weeks from the 18th of December. It will reopen on 11th January 2016.
 
 

Whangarei Christmas Festival

When: Saturday 12th December 2015
Time: 4:30pm
Where: Northland Events Centre (Toll Stadium), Okara Park, Okara Drive, Whangarei
Restrictions: All Ages
Admission: Free
 
The annual Christmas Festival is being held on Saturday 12 December at Toll Stadium from 5.30pm. Gates open at 4.30pm so you can come earlier and bring your picnic blanket to reserve a good spot.
 
Bring a Gift along to put under the Christmas tree for The Salvation Army Christmas Hamper collection.
 
Our entertainment line-up will include some awesome home grown talent. As the evening draws to an end Santa and Mrs Claus will make their special appearance and the night will finish with the Fireworks finale.
 
Plus there will be bouncy castles and face painting, street theatre, airbrush tattoos and animal balloons. Glow sticks and Santa hats will be for sale. Santa's Elves will be there to greet you on your arrival and give you a candy cane if you've been good.
 
A great selection of food and beverage will be available for sale.

Auckland

Deaf Aotearoa Office Holiday Closure

Deaf Aotearoa will be closed for three weeks from the 18th of December.

Deaf Aotearoa Hamilton office has changed it’s opening hours. We will now be open Monday-Thursday from 9-4 for appointments and enquiries. Friday’s will be open only if have booked appointment.

Trees at the Meteor

Come and check out the Christmas Tree created by some members of the Waikato Deaf community!! It’s in the Trees at the Meteor Competition!

Bay of Plenty

Deaf Aotearoa Office Closure

The office at Historic Village will be closed for the festive season from Friday 18th December at 4:00pm and will reopen for normal business on Monday 11th January 2016 at 9:00am.
 
Sue Lessing finishes today the 11th December and she will return back to work on Monday the 11th January, 2016.

Christmas Celebrations


Where:
 Tauranga Farmers Market, corner 5th Avenue and Cameron Road, Tauranga
When: Saturday 12th December
Time: 7:45am till 12:00pm.
 
A family morning outing with loads of fun. Santa arrives at 9:00am. There will be balloons and treats and face painting.
Tickets bought for Christmas Market Hampers will be drawn at 9:00am and 10:15am. Ticket holders must be there to claim prize. 
 

Carols on the Waterfront

Te Puke Christmas in the Park

A nice family outing to the Christmas in the Park, a celebration of Christmas for the community. There’s free food, fun and entertainment to celebrate Christmas.
Hamilton Community Gospel Choir, the Dee Street band and interactive activities for kids such as superslides, horse and buggy rides, petting zoo and fireworks.
Bring a picnic blanket and chairs.
This is an initiative of the combined churches of Te Puke.
 
Donations go towards Te Puke’s Community Food Bank.

MS Garage Sale and Sausage Sizzle

MS Taranaki is a Registered Charity that has been run by volunteers for over 30 years and we rely on the generous support by the public of our fundraising activities through the year.

Festival of The Lights - Wonderland Of Lights

At night, fluorescent pebble paths sparkle beneath excited feet, majestic trees and plants glow, and waterfalls and lakes shimmer and shine beneath thousands of lighting displays. But it's the features such as the talking giant, fire poi dancers or the parades that captivate the young and the not so young.

Structures such as the park's water wheel, fountains and historic band rotunda are flooded with lights, while illuminated wooden rowboats offer a romantic boating opportunity like no other.
 
Summer Scene
Summer Scene is the daytime activities and events programme that takes place throughout the New Plymouth District for children and their families. Activities include scavenger hunts, skateboarding events, magicians and much more.
 
On Stage
On Stage is the nightly entertainment programme that takes place in Pukekura Park over the festival. There are two stages of entertainment running throughout the festival (entertainment every night on the Hatchery Lawn and weekends only on the Fred Parker Lawn).

This is available for Deaf to use anywhere in New Zealand.  You need to register first – if you have not register Text 111 please contact Deaf Aotearoa.
 
If you have registered, please make sure that you have same text number you register on.  If you have change text number then you need to re-register again with new number.
 
VRI – Video remote Interpreting
This is available in both Hastings and Napier MSD (Work and Income).  Ask staff at MSD to book your appointment and contact VRI to book interpreter too.  If you use Taradale MSD and need access to VRI, you can ask them to have your case transfer to Napier MSD.  You can explain why need change because you want to access to VRI.  I am sure that staff there will understand.
 

Important Budget Planning

Please make sure over the Christmas and New Year holiday period you have:

  • Planned what kind of Christmas you want (it is big or small)
  • Planned what food you needs
  • Make sure you have enough foods through the holidays
  • Saved and budgeted your money

 As you may not be able to get any assistance as government agencies are closed on public holidays.

Manawatu

Palmerston North Office

Staff from Palmerston North office will be in Wanganui on Monday 7th December for the day, the office in Wanganui and Palmerston North will be closed.  You can still contact us via text should you need some support/make an appointment/urgent matters. 
 
Our office will close for the Christmas break from Friday 18th December at 4:00pm and will re-open on Monday 11th January.  During the holidays should you have any issues, please contact close friends/family.  In the event of an emergency please make sure you’re registered for TXT 111 and contact the Fire, Police or Ambulance Service. If you are not registered you can do this online http://www.police.govt.nz/111-txt , if you are not sure please contact staff to make an appointment to go through this with you. There is only two more weeks!!
 
Our office is currently having a big spring-clean and clean out, Our goal is to have the new layout/settings in our new office ready for us when we return in 2016, this will ensure that we provide a welcoming service so that we are the first thing you see when you come through the front door! Deaf Community Christmas Lunch Get together

This year was the biggest Deaf Community Christmas Lunch get together held here! There were 33 of us…..we all got together at Breakers Café in Wanganui and had a lovely Christmas Lunch along with Secret Santa! A great lunch was had.
 
Thank you to Ann Hanley and Suzanne Hanson for organising the Secret Santa!
 
We would like to wish everyone a very safe and festive Christmas and New Year! We look forward to what 2016 will bring!
   

Christmas in Takaro Park

36th Jenny Mair Highland Square Day

This event will show a wide range of talent from across NZ and overseas! They are highland pipe bands and solo bagpipers, solo drummers and dancers of all ages.  This year will be the 36th year and has a long standing reputation as being very well run and an enjoyable fun event!

Wellington Deaf Society Family Christmas Party


On Saturday 19th of December at Amesbury School Hall, Amesbury Drive, Churton Park. The cost is free. It begins at 4:00pm and finishes at 9:00pm.
 
Please bring a plate to share for supper and also a small present (nothing too expensive, gift value up to 5 dollars).
 
No alcohol allowed, however if you want to continue the party later on there will be a gathering at the 1841 Bar in Johnsonville. There will be children's face painting, fun and games and a Father Christmas.

NZSL Online Dictionary team is collecting signs for place names in your area. If you are a Deaf NZSL signer who has lived in the Otago area for many years, please come to a meeting to video your signs for local place names. Each Deaf person who helps with this will get a supermarket voucher.
