Sharing God’s Big Story With Kids

Every night without fail, three generations of the Waltons sat down at a long farmhouse table and tucked into Olivia’s homemade spread of meat, potatoes, and pie. They prayed together, laughed together, and talked together.

But today’s Christian families are confronting issues that the Waltons never dreamed of. Like how to maintain relationships in an electronic age. Or how to respond when your middle school friend says he’s gay. Or what to do when a teen posts a suicidal message on Facebook.

In our modern-day reality, it’s more important than ever to help children build a strong foundation of faith that will carry them through their increasingly complicated lives.

Five Ways Dwell's Story Symbols Can Help You Tell God's Story

Images are the simplest and most effective way to make sure that information is stored as a long-term memory. As per Dr. Lynell Burmark, an education consultant, our short term memory processes words and can only retain about seven bits of information. In contrast, images are directly processed by our long-term memory, where they get indelibly etched.

This is why I love the Dwell curriculum’s use of story symbols.

The color of the leaves is changing, there’s frost on the ground most mornings, and the local market is stocked with freshly picked apples. In the midst of the pandemic, where each day seems to blend into the next, I’m grateful for these visual reminders that along with the changing seasons, the whole world is in God’s hands.
