Tell Your MP: Solitary Confinement is Torture
June 26 was the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture—urge your Member of Parliament to ban prolonged solitary confinement. Prolonged solitary confinement, confinement exceeding 15 days, is considered torture by the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture because it results in severe psychological damage. However, incarcerated individuals in Canada can remain in isolation for months, years, even decades.
Of the current federal prison population, 48 percent has at one time been placed in solitary confinement. And people of color, mentally ill individuals, and Indigenous people are disproportionately represented among those placed in solitary.
