September 23, 2018 is Abuse Awareness Sunday

Abuse Awareness Sunday, 4th Sunday in September, may seem less needed this year, since abuse seems to be in the headlines almost daily.  With all the other important things facing us, should we really be talking about abuse, especially at church? Yes! This is not the time to bury our heads in the sand and ignore what has become a pressing issue of our day. There is still a silence and secrecy shrouding abuse, especially in our churches. We do not want to acknowledge it in our midst or talk about it. Yet its impacts are very real and touch our lives and our communities in devastating ways. Safe Church Ministry has resources to help churches respond to abuse. What will your church do on Abuse Awareness Sunday?

Safe Church Welcomes Miriam Spies!!!

We are thrilled to have Miriam Spies working 10 hours/week for Safe Church and 20 hours/week for Disability Concerns. She will be working out of the Canadian office and helping us contextualize our ministry in Canada.

Lessons to Learn

There have been many very public situations of abuse and cover up by institutions, including churches. Recently the news has been filled with the scandal involving Bill Hybels and Willow Creek. What lessons are there for the CRC to learn?

Welcome Back to Fall… Welcome Back to Safe Communities

Remember to bring along safe church ministry as your church gears up for the busy fall season. It’s a great time to update policies, provide training for staff and volunteers, and consider using the Circle of Grace program. Safe Church is a partner with you in building safer communities for everyone.

There is Not Enough Being Done to Help Sexual Assault Survivors

So, Safe Church Ministry collaborated with the Office of Social Justice to draft an action alert, encouraging people to contact their representatives about passing a law that would help process the back log of rape kits, in addition to providing other resources for those who have experienced sexual assault. We must work at all levels, individual, community, organizational and global to create lasting change – until the violence of abuse ends.
