Mark your calendars now for the 2020 Safe Church Conference for Coordinators, Connect, Collaborate, and Coordinate to end abuse! It will be held October 22 to 24 in Grand Rapids, MI at the Drury Inn. We are planning on having Boz Tchividjian, founder of GRACE as a featured speaker. He will address our conference, as well speak at an event, which will be open to the public. This conference will be for designated Classis Safe Church Coordinators, and up to two core team members from each classis team. Watch for details coming soon. Our next webinar, leading up to the conference will be held on March 25 at noon Eastern Time. Safe church Coordinators and leaders will connect and collaborate with a focus on best practices for forming safe church teams in classes and congregations.

Praying through Transitions

This article, a Lenten Call to Prayer, was written after Executive Director, Steve Timmermans, resigned. There have been transitions since then in staffing assignments, job titles, and workflow, with promise of more to come.  In addition, now there are recommendations regarding Covid -19, the coronavirus pandemic, which include working remotely, avoiding public gatherings, social distancing, and encouraging virtual meetings. Through it all, we can find comfort and peace, knowing that our God reigns; in all things he is with us.

Talking about Abuse of Power with our Kids

Abuse of power is a significant issue in our culture; it provides the context for all kinds of abuse. Understanding this dynamic from an early age can prevent abuse and help build healthy communities. We need to have conversations about abuse of power not only with our friends and colleagues, but also in our homes, schools and Sunday school rooms with our children. This new resource can help raise up a new generation of people who are learning to use their power well in Christlike ways.

Classis Huron Hosts Annual Inter-Classis Safe Church Conference

About 90 people gathered at Waterloo Christian Reformed Church in Ontario on Saturday, March 7. The annual all-day event brought together safe church committee members, pastors, council members, and others for training and workshops on topics such as bullying, harassment, abuse, and LGBTQ+ issues. Safe Church is  indebted to Atie Ott, and the Classis Huron safe church team, who works very hard to organize this event each year. What a great opportunity this training is for churches.

Mission CRC Hosts Child Abuse Prevention Training

Daily church functioning can seem to take up all the time and energy of its leaders - How can we find time for abuse prevention training? Mission CRC brought in Dove’s Nest, whose sole purpose is to equip churches to prevent child abuse. Organizations like Dove’s Nest focus all their resources toward this one goal - what a gift they are to churches! Another organization we can recommend is Darkness to Light, especially for our non-English speaking congregations. Click in the top right corner to select your preferred language. We’re not alone in this work.
