Fall is Here – We’re Busy

Fall is an exciting time of new beginnings, as well as getting back to old routines. Fall is time for congregations to offer abuse prevention training for staff and volunteers who work with children. And it’s time to get ready for Abuse Awareness Sunday.

PLEASE SEND US FEEDBACK about Abuse Awareness Sunday at your church – even if it wasn’t on Sept. 25 (any time is a good time for abuse awareness). We love to hear what you’re doing – and perhaps that can give someone else encouragement, or an idea for next year as we learn together. Send your Abuse Awareness Sunday reports to – THANKS!

Carol and I have been hugely busy updating our website and planning for a wonderful Safe Church Ministry Conference Nov. 4-5 in Grand Rapids. Even though Grand Rapids is not the most convenient destination – we hope that you will consider coming. There is nothing quite like face-to-face interaction and networking with safe church team members from across North America. This year, if you absolutely can’t make it to Grand Rapids, you can live stream a piece of the conference right to your own computer using this link. You can even gather some people from your congregation or community to participate together in the Friday evening plenary session and/or the Saturday morning plenary session. These sessions are designed to appeal to a wide audience. Fall is here; it’s a busy exciting time for safe church ministry.

New Resources, and a Conference for YOU

A recent letter from the Executive Director, Steve Timmermans, to congregations and classes of the CRCNA, points out the importance of recent changes to Church Order Articles 82-84 and Their Supplements. Find out more about how this provides opportunity to build awareness about Safe Church Ministry.

October is Domestic Abuse Awareness Month

In both Canada and the U.S. October has been designated Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Safe Church has resources that can help bring this hidden problem out into the light. The issue has been the topic of several Network articles, it has been featured at our conference in 2012 and it will appear again at this year’s conference in a workshop and in a plenary event. We must not close our eyes to this hidden issue that affects so many in our congregations.

Thinking Outside the Box

One of the many things that appeals to me about Samaritan SafeChurch, and Linda Crockett’s vision to end child sexual abuse, is the idea of “clusters” of congregations working together in close geographic proximity. When I hear about safe church teams struggling because CRC congregations are so far apart, even within a classis, I wonder what it would it mean for Safe Church if we began to think outside the box, outside the CRC? What would it mean for us if we began to think in terms of partnership with others nearby in our safe church work? Perhaps we can catch Linda’s vision.

Partners in Prevention

The RAVE project (Religion and Violence E-learning) is an initiative that seeks to bring knowledge and social action together to assist families of faith impacted by abuse. You may have heard of this organization before; it’s an excellent resource for pastors, congregations, and anyone who wants to learn more about domestic abuse and the response of the church.

Upcoming Event

It’s not too late for Abuse Awareness Sunday, September 25. Even if you haven’t made plans, showing our new video, distributing a bulletin insert, or setting up an information table may still be possible. Please contact us for ideas to help your congregation become more aware of abuse issues, and CRC Safe Church Ministry.
