Ruth Everhart and the #MeToo Reckoning: Facing the Church’s Complicity in Sexual Abuse and Misconduct

Almost 60 people joined live online for a discussion with Ruth Everhart and many more reached out to Safe Church afterward requesting a link to the recording. Ruth has written a wonderfully insightful and accessible book, drawing out wisdom from her own story, the stories of others, and stories in Scripture to help us understand sexual abuse, and how the church is often complicit in protecting those who abuse, within a church culture of silence and secrecy. Safe Church is also offering a four-week online book study to dive deeper into this conversation. We welcome your input into this conversation. Also, you won’t want to miss our next webinar, May 27th, featuring  Chuck DeGroat, author of “When Narcissism Comes to Church: Healing Your Community from Emotional and Spiritual Abuse”. A book study, led by Eric Kas will take place in the weeks following. Safe Church is excited to offer these webinars and book studies to help us connect, collaborate and coordinate to end abuse.

Are You (and Your Church) Safe and Secure Online?

The Covid-19 Pandemic has changed our lives and the way we do church. As we practice distancing, and increase our connections online, are we asking the right questions about maintaining a safe online environment for everyone? What are we doing to keep our children safe? This article helps churches respond to these very important questions. In addition, we must be aware that there is a darker side, an increase in abuse and other harmful behaviors during this time. Stay at home orders don’t increase safety for everyone, a virus is not the only danger. These two articles are filled with links to resources to help churches cope.

Changes for Safe Church Ministry

C. JoyBell has said, "We can't be afraid of change. You may feel very secure in the pond that you are in, but if you never venture out of it, you will never know that there is such a thing as an ocean, a sea. Holding onto something that is good for you now, may be the very reason why you don't have something better.” New things are in store for Safe Church Ministry as director, Bonnie Nicholas, makes plans to retire in November. Leadership may change, but the mission and ministry remain. Please keep this transition in your prayers, this is an important time for Safe Church. We don’t want to lose any traction or momentum, but rather seek increased influence and effectiveness for Safe Church.

Conference News Update!!!

Safe Church has made a difficult decision to transform our fall Safe Church Conference. It will no longer be a face-to-face gathering in Grand Rapids. We are grieved to make this decision, yet believe it is wise, and the right thing to do in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic. The amount of time and resources that would need to be invested now, into such an uncertain future event caused us to think again about other, potentially better, options. Our commitment to our mission, and to our Safe Church Coordinators, has not changed! We look forward to discovering new opportunities and new ways to connect, collaborate and coordinate to end abuse. Stay tuned for more updates!

Responding to Abuse: A Toolkit for Churches - Second Edition is Now Available

Now in its second edition, this resource has been expanded, and the online version is now translated into Korean and Spanish. Pray with us as we work with, and seek to identify people who have language expertise, with Korean or Spanish as a first language, and who are also knowledgeable about abuse. We greatly desire some walk-alongside assistance as we seek to refine these translations, and understand so many cultural issues that surround these sensitive topics before going to print with these resources. Please let us know if you know people who can help us in developing better resources for our Spanish-speaking and Korean churches.
