Justice, Grace, and Worth — Rachael Denhollander's Victim Impact Statement

Michigan State University is still reeling from the incredible enableism that allowed Larry Nassar to sexually abuse so many young women. Rachael Denhollander was the first person to take a stand, even though her church didn’t stand by her. It’s is a must listen for the church as Rachael Denhollander powerfully delivers her Victim Impact Statement. Let’s listen, empathize and respond  in our own communities. Read the summary of her statement, listen to the full 36 ½ minutes or engage the topic with the many other people who have already commented on our network post here.

Abuse Awareness, Prevention, and Response: How Will It Happen In Your Classis?

Silence is no longer an option. In this watershed #MeToo moment, the Church must be ready to respond to sexual abuse. Active safe church ministry equips God’s people to respond in situations of abuse with understanding, compassion and justice that foster healing. This response provides opportunity for the transforming power of God to be revealed in our midst. In addition, active safe church ministry helps build communities where the value of each person is honored, preventing abuse before it happens. Safe church ministry: abuse awareness, prevention and response. How will it happen in your classis? Join us by finding out more about how we can work together to meet our goal of having a Safe Church Coordinator in each classis!

Responding to Abuse Toolkit Step #2: Understanding the Power Dynamic

Safe Church is working on a toolkit that will help us better respond, as the church, when a situation of abuse arises. An effective response  is not possible without first understanding the dynamics and impacts of abuse, especially the power dynamic. This, the first in a series of blogs from our future toolkit, will help you understand the power dynamic.

Partners in Prevention: Our Stories Untold

We’re very excited to welcome Hilary Scarsella this fall, as one of the presenters at #Equipped. She helped to found an organization called “Our Stories Untold”, which gave people an online format to share their stories of abuse at the hands of church and ministry leaders. This led to growing opportunities for ministry. Hilary, a theologian and author, has written an article called, Responding to Reports of Abuse: Who’s Getting it Right? And Where Does Theology Come In? What can we learn from partnership with others? What, that they have already learned, can be applied in the CRC?
