Tell Your State Legislators: Solitary Confinement is Torture

June is Torture Awareness month—urge your state legislators to ban prolonged solitary confinement. Prolonged solitary confinement, confinement exceeding 15 days, is considered torture by the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture because it results in severe psychological damage. However, incarcerated individuals in the U.S. can remain in isolation for months, years, even decades.

At any one moment 80,000 to 100,000 individuals are being held in solitary confinement in the U.S. And people of color are disproportionately represented among those placed in solitary.

Click the button below to write your state legislators and urge them to ban prolonged solitary confinement in your state.
