What is Energy Medicine?
By Sarah O’Doherty M.Ed.

"We're beginning now to understand things that we know in our hearts are true but we could never measure. As we get better at understanding how little we know about the body, we begin to realize that the next big frontier in medicine is energy medicine. It's not the mechanistic part of the joints moving. It's not the chemistry of our body. It's understanding, for the first time, how energy influences how we feel."    Mehmet Oz, MD  Cardiovascular Surgeon, NYPresbyterian Medical Center

So what exactly IS this next big frontier in medicine?
Well, of course the best way to know Energy Medicine is to experience it first-hand.  As I practice it, Energy Medicine is a gentle hands-on treatment to restore the body to its natural state of self-regulation and self-healing.  You will be hearing more and more about this new frontier as it bursts into the mainstream.  Many people who try energy medicine have tried many traditional and non-traditional approaches with no resolution.  Energy Medicine seeks the core cause underlying the dis-ease or dis-order in the body.

Is it like Reiki?
Yes, Reiki is a form of energy medicine but I practice a different and more specific form called Brennan Healing Science.   As a graduate of the four year  Barbara Brennan School of Healing I am trained to work in collaboration with the medical and counseling professions to bring about optimal states of health for clients.  Energy Medicine practitioners are complementary to regular medical care.  The two can strengthen each other significantly.  Brennan Healing Practitioners can focus in on a particular issue and provide energy treatments to bring the body/mind/spirit back into coherence.

How does it work and what does a session look like?
Energy Medicine looks at the way your electro-magnetic field works to support the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual being.  It begins, as most professional appointments do, with a thorough intake process to identify an area for treatment.  As a practitioner I look for areas of strength and then for ways in which the client’s energy is disrupted.  After listening carefully to the client, I then ‘listen’ to the client’s body and do an assessment of their electro-magnetic energy field. Then using gentle touch over the client’s fully clothed body, I balance and direct the client’s energy to its ‘home base’.   Most people find this very relaxing.  Sessions last one hour.

Why would I come for a session for Energy Medicine?
I work with people who have a variety of issues: pain, anxiety, allergies, stress, even memory and learning problems.  Over the years I’ve worked with many people pre and post surgery.  A patient about to undergo a surgery might feel anxious or full of dread.  When they receive an energy treatment they feel more relaxed and their systems are more resilient during and after surgery.  Post-surgery energy treatments shorten recovery time and lessen the need for medications.   Recently, I worked with a patient for knee replacement surgery for her second knee.  Though she was even more anxious about the second surgery which was much more involved, she experienced a gentler process , less pain,  shorter recovery time with much less medication.  She was amazed.

Can I do Energy Medicine for myself?
Yes, of course you can.  There are many new forms of self-healing that are easy to learn and simple to use.  Many of my sessions consist of coaching patients to use Emotional Freedom Techniques (tapping on acupressure points) or Tapas Acupressure Techniques (holding pressure points).  It is very handy to have these tools at your fingertips for use in your everyday life.  With regular practice, you will find all sorts of health and emotional issues improving!
