In Patrick's Opinion

Saying No

To Nationalizing Exchanges!

"The government in Sofia risks being
seen as a new model of sovereign-wealth robber baron. This can only hurt
the country and its economy."

- Victor Papazov and Patrick L Young
Wall Street Journal September 7th, 2010.

Dear <<First Name>>,

I have co-written an Op Ed in the Wall Street Journal today with Victor Papazov, the man who is effectively "Mr Stock Exchange" in Bulgaria. The topic is a matter of vital importance for anybody involved in the exchange industry, even from a distance.

The Opinion Page piece is devoted to the rather curious behaviour of the Bulgarian government who are trying to nationalize the Bulgarian Exchange - which runs a touch counter to, well, the whole point of capitalism!

Here's the link to the article entitled "Save Bulgaria's Stock Exchange":

(if you do not have a subscription you can actually email the article from this page even without a sub to anybody who you wish to see it! - alternatively the article is on page 12 of today's paper edition in Europe).

(See also: ).

The entire documentation to date has been published only in Bulgarian and the local media are basically terrified of the story getting out but I believe it is vitally important that we try to stop what is essentially an act by a 'Sovereign Wealth Robber Baron' as it will have a deeply adverse effect on not merely the Bulgarian economy but also has ramifications for exchanges throughout the world and particularly the EU and the single market.

I am very keen to try to get the word out as I believe this is a fundamentally damaging issue for not merely the Bulgarian economy but in fact has ramifications for our industry if it is allowed to go through!

I am available to discuss this if you have any questions.

As usual it's been a pleasure talking at you...

With best wishes,

Patrick L Young

About This Newsletter

Patrick L Young is the author of several financial market books such as "Capital Market Revolution!" and

"The Exchange Manifesto" His Op Eds have been published in most of the world's leading financial media such as the Financial Times and Wall Street Journal while he has appeared frequently on BBC,CNBC, CNN and other digital media throughout the world.

My expertise is, (in no particular order!) exchanges, derivatives, market infrastructure and financial centres, as well as emerging markets. I can claim modest provenance as an early adopter on the web, having published various online magazines along with other WWW ventures since 1995. Nowadays I enjoy a varied portfolio of advisory work (most notably for investors in exchanges) but along the way I have done just about everything from multiple financial start-ups through to advising government and other stakeholders in financial centres the world over. I also indulge in some  entrepreneurial projects too. After more than 20 years in finance some folk might think I am due a spot of remission for good behaviour. I think it is clear from this bulletin, my passion for markets remains as keen as ever!
