Electronic waste event: Recap

This month, BASE Members and friends recycled some 2,000 pounds of electronic waste. The most recent BASE event took place at Boocoo Cafe, and focused on recycling and waste reduction, with presenters from PC Rebuilders and Recyclers and Evanston nonprofit Collective Resource, Inc.

Among the event participants was David Reynolds, owner of The Homestead. Reynolds says he "found it very interesting. I have always wondered about the electronics waste stream and now I know a little bit about it. From a practical standpoint I was able to get a year's worth of dead electronic devices into that recycle/waste stream and keep it out of a landfill."

New Informational Resources

Check out new BASE Informational Resources for sector-specific ideas, resources and contacts to help your business go green. Resources are organized by a number of categories: Energy, Water, Recycling/Waste reduction, Purchasing, Footprint, Landscaping, Transportation and Staff Wellness.

One way to save money and be more sustainable this winter is to weatherize and insulate your space. Visit the office and retail page to find out how.

Featured Member: Harmony Haus

Harmony Haus specializes in environmentally conscious painting services for residential and commercial interiors. Emphasis is on safe, non-toxic, environmentally friendly, recycled, sustainable and local materials.

Owner Nichole Lovett answered our questions:

BASE: What plans do you have to make Harmony Haus even more sustainable?

NL: My work in the painting contractor field is always changing. New developments in paint technology are always reducing or improving upon coatings, and there is no longer any need to rely on toxic products. I would like to find a use for old roller covers when they have come to the end of their life - I hate having to send them to the landfill.

BASE: What challenges do you face in carrying out your mission?

NL: Luckily people are becoming more aware of environmental issues and seeking out my type of work. Educating people about what I do and why they should hire me for my services hasn't always been so easy. There are people who don't see the value in choosing a premium paint, let alone a no-VOC paint when they have always used $10 gallons from a big box store.

BASE: Do you have advice for other Evanston businesses interested in sustainability?

NL: Going green is a no-brainer for me. My business doesn't appeal to everyone, but it doesn't have to. I have created a niche market by staying true to my values, operating in business as I do in my personal life, and people can tell the difference. There are many things that every business can do to become a little greener for little to no cost and hopefully the momentum will spread. Caring about the environment is the right thing to do.
