National President's Welcome

Dear JCI Australia members, friends, family and partners,

I want to welcome you all to a new year and hope 2019 has got off to a flying start. I am pleased to bring you the first update from JCI Australia for 2019, as well as my first address as National President.

The Make It Happen Weekend dates and location have been set. This year we will assemble in Wollongong on the 23rd and 24th February for a weekend focused on ACTION! This weekend will align with the National Annual General Meeting, more details to be released soon.

Other important dates to mark in your calendars include: JCI Australia National Convention (23-24th November in Melbourne), Asia-Pacific Area Conference (17-20th June in Jeju, Korea), JCI World Congress (4-8 November in Tallinn, Estonia), and Let’s Do It! World Cleanup Day (21 September) – I hope to see you at one or more of these!

As a leader, the best thing that I could hope for is a team that inspires me and one that I can learn from. I am honoured to introduce the 2019 Leadership Team, and I can genuinely say they inspire me, and everyday work with them gives me the opportunity to learn. Please welcome:

National Directors:
Keirin McCormack (Finance)
Sarah Lisle, (IPNP/Governance)
Sen. Suzi Chen (Communications)
David Watters (Partnerships), and
Emory White (International Relations).

National Officers:

Meg Cummins (Young Alumni/Pipeline Project)

Local Presidents:

Travel Scholarships

This year's Make It Happen (MIH) Weekend will take place in Wollongong, NSW from 23 to 24 February. The MIH Weekend is just that - a weekend that brings everyone together to plan and strategise and MAKE THINGS HAPPEN.
To support our members to attend this action-packed leadership training weekend, JCI Australia is pleased to offer ten (10) $100 travel scholarships. Current financial members from Australian Local Organisations are eligible to apply.

To find out more about these scholarships and how you can apply, download the application form here. The application deadline is Sunday 17 February 2019 at 5pm (AEST).

Just as the weekend suggests, we are making it happen and applications will be considered as soon as they are received. So don’t procrastinate as only 10 travel bursaries are available! Successful applicants will be notified no later than Wednesday 20 February 2019.

Awards and Recognitions

2019 has started off brilliantly as we congratulate 5 of our Senators who were honoured with an Order of Australian Medal on the Australia Day. These outstanding individuals are:

  • 1985 National President Sen. John Kenny for "service to the community"
  • JCI Australia Senate Group Chair Sen. Peter Snow for "service to the community of Albany"
  • Sen. Brian Hopkins for "service to print media, and to the community"
  • 1987 JCI Australia Outstanding Regional President Ken Barker for "service to the community of Glen Innes"
  • Sen. Michael Perkins for "service to the community".

The Order of Australia is an order of chivalry established on 14 February 1975 by Elizabeth II, Queen of Australia, to recognise Australian citizens and other persons for achievement or meritorious service.

In addition, we also welcome our latest Senator 77700 Natalie Barton Leeson (Perth). Natalie was presented with her senatorship at the WA Senate Australia Day function on 25 January.

Congratulations to the above award recipients and thank you for being an inspiration to us all.

A short Message from Our New National Communications Officer, Kristen Huey a.k.a. “The WA Numbers Nerd”

Hello everyone.

My name is Kristen and I am very excited to be a part of the national team as Communications Officer in 2019! Here are the top 5 things you may not know about me:

  • I am an avid reader, so always happy to receive your ‘must read’ recommendations.
  • Originally from Brisbane, Queensland, I am now based in Perth, Western Australia.
  • Professionally I have been in the Financial Services Industry for 13 years (yay numbers!).
  • My community service began in 1998 as part of a Refugee Settlement Scheme (Red Cross).
  • Finally, I am here to learn and grow with the JCI community, which is full of incredible people (yes, including you). I am looking forward to getting to know you and your story as part of the communications team for JCI Australia.
