The UK Association for Science and Discovery Centres brings together over 60 of the nation's major science engagement organisations, who together reach 20 million people each year

Welcome to the ASDC Newsletter

A round-up of the month's interesting updates, developments and opportunities for science engagement professionals across the UK.

A very warm welcome to our June 2017 newsletter.

A very warm welcome to the June newsletter and we look forward to seeing many of you this week at the European Science Centres conference in Porto, Ecsite 2017.

We are delighted to announce that ASDC has two exciting new national strategic STEM projects. The first will share how gases will be used in the future and we are now inviting science centres and museums to apply to participate. The second is an exciting National Environmental Science Programme with NERC, and invitations to participate will go out later this month.

Another of ASDC's STEM programmes, 'Destination Space' funded by the UK Space Agency, has now reached 733,017 children and adults who have participated in schools workshops and family activities. Joyfully, the academic national evaluation of 12,000 students who took part, showed no difference between girls and boys, or between children from areas high on the Indices of multiple deprivation and other areas.

We will also soon be opening bookings for the 2017 ASDC National Conference, hosted by Dynamic Earth in Edinburgh on September 19th and 20th this year. We look forward to a vibrant conference with great speakers and discussions and to seeing many of you there.

Warm wishes
Dr Penny Fidler, CEO

New ASDC Projects

Invitation to Participate now live! Deadline: 11 July

Gases are used in all areas of science, engineering, medicine and life in general. This project will bring alive a range of gases and celebrate their unexpected uses now and their huge potential for the future, especially the technological innovation that is vital as we move towards a lower carbon and more energy-efficient society.

This programme will be directed and project managed by The UK Association for Science and Discovery Centres who have considerable experience managing national strategic multi-partner science engagement programmes. This programme is delivered through the generous financial support of BOC and The Royal Society of Chemistry.

We are now seeking nine Science and Discovery Centres or Science Museums across the UK to partner with us for this exciting and unique national programme.

The UK Association for Science and Discovery Centres (ASDC) are delighted to announce the launch of a new partnership with the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) bringing together the latest research into key environmental issues with the talents and infrastructure of the nation’s largest network of science engagement organisations.

The partnership comprises a 2-year national programme that will engage, inspire and involve school-age children and their families with the amazing stories and science of environmental cience, investigating the latest innovations, dispelling myths and exploring our world-leading environmental research. The activities will also give young people the confidence, curiosity, and interest to continue to explore and ask questions long after they leave the events at science and discovery centres.

This national programme is led by ASDC with scientific expertise from NERC, Natural History Museum, Dynamic Earth and Eden Project. The programme will engage over 100,000 children and adults and will be delivered by 10 science centres in 2018.

Further information about applying for the programme will be available soon.

The 2017 ASDC National Conference

19 - 20 September

We are delighted to invite you to our 2017 National Conference which will be hosted by the excellent science centre Dynamic Earth, in the heart of the lovely city of Edinburgh.

The Main Conference will be at Dynamic Earth on Wednesday September 20 September with a host of great speakers, the ever popular Pecha Kucha and a range of facilitated discussion sessions on topics highly relevant to staff at all stage of their careers. The day before the conference, Tuesday 19 September, we also invite members to the ASDC AGM at 3pm, and to the vibrant 2017 Conference Dinner at 7.30pm, both at Dynamic Earth.

ASDC Ecsite Dinner

ASDC are once again hosting a Members’ dinner for those attending Ecsite this year. The dinner will be held at the beautiful O Caçula Restaurante. very close to the Porto City Hall where the Speakers’ Reception will take place. As with previous years, this is an informal chance to catch up with others from our membership, join us for dinner, or just drinks if you prefer. The dinner will be hosted by Dr Penny Fidler and Andy McLeod of ASDC.

Please book through Eventbrite to let us know you are coming.

Tim Peake and the UK Space Conference

ASDC were also at the UK Space Conference at the start of this month. The CEO, Dr Penny Fidler was on the panel in the plenary session on the last day, with astronaut Tim Peake, and with David Parker who now leads the human Spaceflight and robotic exploration part of the European Space Agency.

Penny would like to pass on Tim Peake's heartfelt congratulations and thanks to all the ASDC partner science centres and museums who delivered space activities and celebrated his mission through the ASDC programme 'Destination Space'. The programme has now reached 733,017 children and adults and the academic evaluation results show that across 12,000 students, girls and boys were equally inspired as were children from areas high on the indices of multiple deprivation. We worked hard to make this programme appeal equally to all children in all areas, and are delighted with the outcomes.

International Science Center and Science Museum Day 2017

Building on an outstanding global debut last November, the world’s science centers and science museums are pleased to announce the 2017 International Science Center and Science Museum Day (ISCSMD) for Friday, November 10, in conjunction with UN’s World Science Day for Peace and Development.

Participating is easy. Your involvement can range from something as simple as putting your dot on the map to labeling your existing programs and exhibitions as ISCSMD 2017 events to creating a totally new experience for your visitors.

Don’t forget we are all biased!

As STEM educators and during the creation, design, delivery and evaluation of our projects and exhibitions, we all know it is our constant responsibility to maintain awareness of our own unconscious bias as well as monitoring it in those we work with.

As a challenge this month, why not take another Harvard Project Implicit Test. Find out how gender biased you may be and keep awareness up across your organisation with all the decisions you make that may help to promote the development of truly socially inclusive science for the future.
