I was  talking to an artist about cochineal, the red dye material. She had never heard of it before, even though it’s a natural coloring in many of our foods. Some people find that icky because cochineal is an insect, specifically a scale insect. It is found in our area on cactus plants. If you see small, white fuzzy things on the cactus pads, you can carefully pick it off and squish it. You will find the red dye on your fingers. That beautiful red became a trade item in during the Spanish exploration of the “New World.”

The cochineal insect is harvested and dried. It is available today in both its dry form and as a powdered extract. They each give a slightly differently shade of red. If using the dried insects, it is usually preferred to grind them up before starting the dyeing process—in a dedicated blender, of course.  Cochineal is used in combination with indigo to get a beautiful aubergine purple.

The Kimbell Art Museum will host an Artful Readings evening about the book A Perfect Red: Empire, Espionage, and the Quest for the Color of Desire. More information here.
Have you ever thought about the everyday idioms we use that contain the word red? Bill Blass, the fashion designer, is quoted as saying, “When in doubt, wear red.” Taylor Swift said, “Red is such an interesting color to correlate with emotion, because it's on both ends of the spectrum. On one end you have happiness, falling in love, infatuation with someone, passion, all that. On the other end, you've got obsession, jealousy, danger, fear, anger and frustration.”
PRoPER pieces are coming down. I'll be there Saturday, March 21, 5-6 PM. Come buy and have a glass of wine or something else.
