Bitten by the Science Bug
Stone Laboratory has a long tradition of educating Great Lakes residents about Lake Erie’s ecosystem – the field station on Gibraltar Island, run by Ohio Sea Grant and part of Ohio State University, has been in business since 1895. Today, Stone Lab offers introductory and advanced science courses for high school and college students every summer, field trips for middle and high school students every spring and fall, and research support for scientists year-round. Ohio Sea Grant and Stone Lab are part of a five-year, $7.6 million National Science Foundation project, led by Bowling Green State University, that aims to reach more than 28,000 students with hands-on, innovative natural sciences education that improves learning and encourages sharing of learned information beyond the classroom.

Continuing its efforts to introduce its Great Lakes Climate Change Curriculum to a wide audience of teachers and educators, Ohio Sea Grant will present “Introduction to Great Lakes Climate Education Resources” on October 19. The webinar will include tips for adapting lessons to unique educational needs, as well as a Q&A session.

While climate change is a global phenomenon, the way it affects different places can vary greatly. The Ohio State Climate Change Outreach Team focuses on the effects of a changing climate in the Great Lakes region, bringing up-to-date information to legislators, community planners and citizens through a range of products.

Ohio State Communicators Meet at Stone Lab
Communications staff from 32 Ohio State units and 3 regional campuses met at Stone Laboratory last month to discuss university communications, learn new ways to spread the Ohio State message, and of course spend some time experiencing Lake Erie science up close. Stone Lab Open House a Resounding Success
More than 900 visitors got a first-hand look at Ohio Sea Grant’s research, education and outreach facilities on Lake Erie during the 15th Annual Stone Lab Open House. Visitors toured Stone Lab buildings on Gibraltar and South Bass Islands, and met some of Lake Erie’s animal residents. [ Read more ]
Family Fishing Day at Lake Erie Nature & Science Center
Ohio Sea Grant Extension Educator Tory Gabriel taught 31 participants the basics of fishing equipment, knot tying, casting, and fish species at the Lake Erie Nature & Science Center’s Family Fishing Day on September 22. According to Gabriel, “the program opens the door for a lifetime of experiences and learning on our Great Lake.” [ Read more ]
