Twine Line Spring/Summer 2013
The newest issue of Ohio Sea Grant's Twine Line is now available online and will reach subscriber mailboxes soon. The issue includes stories on Stone Lab's impact on Lake Erie research and education, predicting harmful algal blooms, and Stone Lab's Monarch Butterfly Waystation at the South Bass Island Lighthouse.
  Predicting the Bloom
After an accurate first-time prediction last year, the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS) once again issued a seasonal harmful algal bloom (HAB) forecast for Lake Erie at an all-day press event at Stone Lab on July 2, 2013.
  Teacher at Sea
One of the most compe-titive teacher professional development options out there is NOAA's Teacher at Sea Program. More than 200 teachers apply each year, but less than 30 are selected to join NOAA researchers in the field. This year, Stone Lab educator Angela Greene was one of those select few.
  A Butterfly Rest Area
Monarch butterfly migrations can be spectacular, due to the insects' large size and bright orange color. Along their way, they stop at Waystations, set up by nonprofits and private citizens, to rest. One of those stations, set up by Stone Lab staff, can now be found at the South Bass Island Lighthouse.
Shoreline Fishing in Ohio
Dr. Thomas Blaine, Associate Professor with Ohio State University Extension, and researchers from Ohio Sea Grant have determined that shoreline anglers - those who fish from shore locations like docks and jetties instead of boats - value their Lake Erie fishing at an annual average of $13.5 million.
A Summer of Learning
Stone Lab classes give students the opportunity to experience field science first-hand, to catch up on college credits or get a head start on major requirements, and to simply have a great time learning with other students. For Stephanie Harpster, her Stone Lab summer was all of those things and more.
Sandusky Clean Marina
The City of Sandusky has been honored as a Certified Ohio Clean Marina, having put into practice voluntary best management actions designed to protect Lake Erie and the coastal environment. An official certification ceremony was held on September 5 at the Paper District Marina.
