The issue includes stories on faster-growing yellow perch, a rapid test to detect a deadly fish disease, and new research into the causes and impacts of climate change in the Great Lakes region.

  Yellow Perch: Bigger, Faster, Stronger
Researchers at Ohio State University's South Centers are breeding yellow perch to thrive in aquaculture, potentially increasing the profit fish farmers can make from their business. The fish reach market size about 30% faster than unimproved perch while needing less feed.
  Presenting at the 56th IAGLR Conference
Researchers and educators from Ohio Sea Grant and Stone Lab will present four research posters at the 56th Annual Conference on Great Lakes Research at Purdue University. The abstracts cover Great Lakes education and Lake Erie ecosystem health.
  2013 Stone Lab Summer Guest Lectures
The schedule for the 2013 Stone Lab Guest Lectures is now available online. Speakers include researchers, government officials, and business leaders. Lectures can be viewed in person at Stone Lab, or via a live webcast at the Aquatic Visitors Center or from any computer.
Milwaukee's Climate Initiative
The Ohio State University Climate Change Outreach Team will present “Milwaukee’s Climate Initiative” on Thursday, June 13, 2013. Kevin L. Shafer, Executive Director of the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) will discuss how Milwaukee is using infrastructure to become more resilient to climate change and increase energy efficiency, and how fostering local leadership has helped launch these initiatives while building a strong economy.

NOAA Seasonal Forecast of Harmful Algal Blooms
Stone Lab will host a media briefing on July 2 to explain NOAA’s second seasonal harmful algal bloom (HAB) forecast in the Great Lakes. The presentation will feature a field experience and expert commentary, as well as a brief overview of the history of this work on Lake Erie. A webinar in the afternoon will allow the public to participate remotely.

Stone Lab Student Profile: Scott Hoff
High school teacher Scott Hoff first visited Stone Lab 22 years ago, as a first-year teacher. Today, he not only continues to take Stone Lab classes whenever possible, but also collaborates with fellow teachers on introducing students to the hands-on learning opportunities available on Lake Erie and beyond.
