Stone Lab Hosts 2012 HABs Forecast
NOAA presented its first-ever seasonal forecast for harmful algal blooms in Lake Erie at a press event held at Stone Laboratory. Representatives from NOAA, Heidelberg University, the University of Toledo and Ohio Sea Grant were on hand to answer questions from reporters and the public in person and via a webinar, and guests were able to experience real-world sampling techniques used to inform the computer models that created the forecast. Kristin Stanford, Education & Outreach Specialist and Research Scientist for Ohio Sea Grant and the Ohio State University’s Stone Laboratory, presented her work with the Lake Erie Water Snake at the June 14 Stone Laboratory Guest Lecture, outlining her contribution to the snake's removal from the federal threatened and endangered species list. A recording of her presentation is now available online.

Ohio Sea Grant, as part of the Ohio State University Climate Change Outreach Team, has released the first set of lessons in an updated Great Lakes Climate Change Curriculum. Including both newly created activities and updates to previously available materials, the free lessons are available for download from the Team’s website.

Stone Laboratory recently hosted members of Ohio State’s President’s Club, an exclusive group of university supporters, in two events at the facility. Visitors were able to tour Gibraltar Island, speak with students and researchers, and experience island life for a day.

U.S. Representative Kaptur Speaks at Stone Lab

Scholarships Support 73 Future Scientists
Many students at Stone Laboratory this summer were able to come to Gibraltar Island through a combined total of $78,998 in scholarships and tuition waivers. The generous support of private, non-profit and corporate donors made it possible for 73 students to research and study with some of the best Lake Erie researchers in the Great Lakes region. OSG Tourism Director Helps Industry Transition into New State Law
In her role as the interim director of the Ohio Travel Association, Ohio Sea Grant Tourism Program Director Melinda Huntley is assisting in efforts to help the Ohio tourism industry understand and adapt to a new state law that will significantly increase marketing funds for the state. [ Read more ]
