Harmful Algal Bloom Forecast 2016

On July 7, 2016 from 2-4 p.m. ET, Ohio Sea Grant’s Stone Laboratory will host a free public webinar to explain NOAA’s 2016 Seasonal Forecast of Harmful Algal Blooms for Lake Erie (issued at a 10 a.m. press conference earlier that day), including expert commentary, a discussion of the history of this issue on Lake Erie, Ohio’s response to the problem, and a Q&A sessionRegistration is required.

Toxic-algae alert system in the works for Ohio lakes

The Cyanobacteria Assessment Network — a collaboration of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, U.S. Geological Survey and NASA — is developing an early warning system to detect toxic algae blooms in inland lakes across the U.S.

Where do mayflies end up? Blowing in wind

This year's class of mayflies has begun to emerge from its Lake Erie sediment hatching ground, but prevailing winds may mean the swarms show up much farther west than in previous years.

Wetlands can aid battle against algal blooms

Wetlands such as the Old Woman Creek State Nature Preserve East provide a home for animals, birds and fish. But they also perform a function that's become urgent: Filtering out some of the nutrients that would otherwise flow into Lake Erie and nourish harmful algal blooms.
