Stone Lab Open House

The Friends of Stone Laboratory and Ohio Sea Grant invite the public to attend the 15th Annual FOSL Open House at Stone Lab on Gibraltar Island. The event takes place on Saturday, September 8, from 11:30am to 3:30pm, and admission is free. Visitors can tour the lab facilities, attend lectures and demonstrations covering the latest in Lake Erie science, and get a first-hand look at the oldest freshwater field station in the U.S.

OSU Researchers Study Lakeshore Demographics

Mark Partridge, Elena Irwin and Heather Stephens of OSU’s Department of Agricultural, Environmental & Development Economics have found that proximity to the lakeshore can raise the value of a property by up to $40,000 dollars, but that the “lakeshore premium” effect diminishes rapidly as one moves away from Lake Erie.


Ohio Sea Grant Knauss Fellow Recounts Experience

Studying Ice-Making Algae in Lake Erie

Researchers from BGSU are studying the role of diatoms, a type of algae, in Lake Erie ice formation, as well as how diatoms might contribute to the dead zone and overall food web. The algae grow in winter and many die off in the summer, sinking to the bottom where they could be eaten by fish or decompose to fuel the dead zone. [ Read more ]

Green Energy Updates Go Live at Stone Lab

Recent renovations at Stone Laboratory included not only updates to many of the research areas, but also the installation of solar electricity panels near the lab building and solar thermal tubes on the roof of the dining hall. Together, the solar arrays will supply 10-25% of the island’s energy needs. [ Read more ]

Teachers Get Hands-On Look at Climate Curriculum

14 teachers from Ohio, Indiana and Michigan were introduced to some of the lessons in the updated Great Lakes Climate Change Curriculum provided by Ohio Sea Grant. The event, held at the University of Toledo’s Lake Erie Center, covered eight activities, ranging from graphing exercises to outdoor labs. [ Read more ]
