New Announcements

 
In addition to the High Court exercise, due to launch on 12 January, and the Recorder exercise,  due to launch on 1 February, 10 new exercises have been added to the programme.

Click on the exercise headings below to find out more about each exercise, and to sign up for alerts about those you are interested in. Remember to check the website regularly for updates, and to see if any new exercises have been added to the programme.

Salaried Legal Roles

Costs Judge of the Senior Courts

An exercise is expected to launch in January 2017 to identify a Costs Judge of the Senior Courts. Costs Judges have the power to assess the costs of, or arising out of any cause or matter in the Senior Courts.

Bills assigned to Costs Judges for assessment are normally above £100,000 and there is no maximum limit; it is not uncommon for bills to exceed £1,000,000.

President of the First-tier Tribunal, Tax Chamber

An exercise to identify the next President of the First-tier Tribunal, Tax Chamber is expected to launch early in the new year. Keep an eye out on the JAC website for more information coming soon.

Circuit Judge

A Circuit Judge selection exercise is expected to launch spring 2017. Vacancies are anticipated across all circuits and jurisdictions (crime, civil and family) although not necessarily all jurisdictions on each circuit.

District Judge (Magistrates' Courts)

An exercise is expected to launch spring 2017 to identify candidates to recommend for the post of District Judge (Magistrates’ Courts). 17 vacancies are currently anticipated.

Salaried Judges of the First-tier Tribunal

An exercise is expected to launch spring 2017 to identify candidates to recommend for the post of Salaried Judge of the First-tier Tribunal.

Unlike previous exercises, which have sought to identify candidates for a particular chamber, this exercise will identify candidates who can be deployed to any of the First-tier Tribunal chambers.

Fee-paid Legal Roles


Fee-paid Judges of the First-tier Tribunal, Health, Education and Social Care Chamber and of the Mental Health Review Tribunal for Wales - Restricted Patients Panel


The JAC has been asked to recommend candidates for the Restricted Patients Panel in both the First-tier Tribunal, Health Education and Social Care Chamber and the Mental Health Review Tribunal for Wales. This exercise is expected to launch summer 2017.

Non-legal Roles

Fee-paid Professional Members of the Residential Property Tribunal, Wales

Key opportunities have arisen for Chartered Surveyors to contribute to the work of a small independent tribunal, helping to resolve disputes relating to private rented and leasehold property.

This exercise is due to launch on 5 January.

Fee-paid Professional Members of the First-tier Tribunal, Property Chamber

The JAC has been asked to recommend 11 candidates for the post of Fee-paid Professional Member of the First-tier Tribunal, Property Chamber. This exercise is expected to launch spring/summer 2017.

Salaried Surveyor Member of the Upper Tribunal, Lands Chamber

An opportunity has arisen for Members and Fellows of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors to apply for the role of Salaried Surveyor Member of the Upper Tribunal, Lands Chamber. This exercise is expected to launch summer 2017.

Fee-paid Medical Members of the First-tier Tribunal, Health Education and Social Care Chamber (Mental Health) and of the Mental Health Review Tribunal for Wales

Medical Members are sought for the First-tier Tribunal, Health, Education and Social Care Chamber and the Mental Health Review Tribunal for Wales.

The tribunals are responsible for deciding upon the necessity for the continued compulsory detention of mentally disordered patients in hospital or the continuation of a conditional discharge, guardianship, or a community treatment order.

This exercise is expected to launch summer 2017.
