From the President & CEO

National Entrepreneurship Week is this month, February 16-23, so it is a perfect opportunity to let you know about two exciting opportunities for youth entrepreneurs in our state this month.

On Monday, February 11, the Colorado legislature committee will vote on Senate Bill 19-103, the "Lemonade Bill." This historic bill would allow young people under the age of 18 to operate a business on an occasional basis without requiring a business license--a big win for youth entrepreneurship!  Preceding the vote, YouthBiz entrepreneurs will join entrepreneurs across the state by participating in a networking and expo session at the Colorado State Capital.

Applications for our annual Spotlight on YouthBiz Stars business competition open on Monday, February 4, and we have an exciting announcement: this year's top prize will be $5,000!  Learn more about the competition for Colorado's top entrepreneurs on our website.  We encourage all levels of business owners, from beginner to expert to apply.

At Young Americans Center, we believe that entrepreneurship is a key to a successful future.  By learning, thinking, speaking, and acting like an entrepreneur, youth from all different backgrounds can excel in school and in life.

AmeriTowne On the Road in Pueblo:

Life Skills you Need to Have

Young AmeriTowne On the Road, presented by CoBank, just returned from an impactful two weeks in Pueblo.  In total, 247 students received a hands-on lesson in free enterprise while the program was set up at Pueblo Community College.

10-year-old Makenna, a fifth-grader at Desert Sage Elementary, heard about the program from her two older sisters and couldn't wait to participate!  Read more about her story and other highlights from the trip on our blog.

Entrepreneur of the Month:

Leila's Essential Care

Leila Hollis is just 12, but she’s already started three businesses!  Her latest enterprise is “Leila’s Essential Care” which sells sugar scrubs and foot balms.  This business combines Leila’s love of creating things and her desire to earn extra spending money.  Plus, Leila won top honors at YouthBiz Camp at Young Americans Center for Financial Education last summer!

Learn more about Leila's Essential Care, plus watch her segment on Colorado & Company last month.

Students Travel the World Without Leaving the State, Thanks to AAA Colorado

Every year, 11,000 young people participate in International Towne, a program of Young Americans Center for Financial Education.  Thanks to long-time partner AAA Colorado, middle school students can experience the world without ever leaving Colorado.

For example, while working in Russia, 13-year-old Sarina encouraged her fellow citizens to visit her country and purchase a chocolate chip cookie.  Customs Agents like Noal, also 13, officially allow visitors into their country by issuing them a stamp into their AAA Colorado passport.

Read more about why this experience is so valuable to students in Colorado on our blog.
