Speak up for Family Farmers & Ranchers at the Capitol

FoFF's Priorities Pick up Steam as Small Farmers & Ranchers Rally in Salem on March 18th.

On February 20th, FoFF’s legislation to reduce red tape for small poultry processors (HB 2393) passed the Oregon House by a 59-1 vote and now awaits Senate action. And HB 2700, our bill to create a state beginning farmer loan program (Aggie Bonds), is on track for a key House committee vote in the coming weeks. Other priority issues, like restoring the long-standing canola-free zone in the Willamette Valley (see below) need a wave of support to secure hearings and votes. We have also been advocating for expanding Oregon's Farm to School program, funding for OSU Extension services that help small farmers, support for Farm Direct Nutrition programs to allow low income seniors and mothers to buy fresh produce at farmer's market and farm stands, reform of aggregate mining policy on high quality farmland, and more.  Learn more about our all of our 2013 legislative priorities, and take action today!

Also, this Friday is your last chance to RSVP for our second annual Family Farmer & Rancher Day at the State Capitol on Monday March 18th. If you can’t make it for the whole day, we hope you will at least join the Rally on the Capitol Steps at 12:30 (900 Court St. NE, Salem). Farmers, ranchers and concerned consumers from around the state will meet legislators to advocate for policies that support our family farmers, ranchers and eaters in sustaining a vibrant local food system and small farm economy.

Canola Bills to Take Center Stage in Salem

Sign the New Petition to Keep Canola Out of the Willamette Valley

There are two bills in the Oregon legislature that would restore the pre-existing canola-free zone in the Willamette Valley to protect specialty seed and vegetable growers, clover producers, and organic farmers. Many legislators are still ‘on the fence’ on this important issue and need to hear from constituents in the coming days and weeks to ensure the Legislature takes action.

One bill, HB 2427, would restore protections in place that prevent the planting of canola in the Willamette Valley. SB 433 as currently written would block canola statewide, but the chief sponsor (Senator Chris Edwards) is planning an amendment to limit its scope to the Willamette Valley where canola is most damaging. Please take action on our petition in support of these bills to make sure your legislators are hearing from you at this critical time.
