Small Farms at the Legislature - Canola, Aggie Bonds advance

Your Help Needed to Push Small Farm Priorities Over the Legislative Finish Line

The Oregon Legislature is now in full throttle, racing towards a scheduled June 28 finish line. In these final days of the session, many small farm and local food priorities hang in the balance, including bills to restrict canola in the Willamette Valley, create a first-ever Oregon beginning farmer and rancher loan program (Aggie Bonds), enhance Oregon's Farm-to-School/school gardens program, reform policies for aggregate mining on Willamette Valley farmland, and expand Farm Direct Nutrition programs for low-income seniors and mothers. Read the latest and take action today!

On the morning of Tuesday, June 25, the full Oregon House will be voting on HB 2427, the bill to protect the Willamette Valley's specialty seed, fresh market vegetable, organic, and clover industries from the introduction of commercial canola production. This bill passed the Joint Ways and Means Committee 16-9 on Friday June 21 after a lengthy debate. Please contact your State Representative and State Senator TODAY and urge them to vote YES on HB 2427! Meanwhile, HB 2700 (Aggie Bonds) is on track to be on the House and Senate floor this week as well. Read the latest news here.
