Conversations about Investing in Regenerative Agriculture

Hi <<First Name>>,

Welcome to the May highlights!

So much seems to be happening in the world of (local) regenerative food systems that it is almost difficult to keep up! I hope you stay safe and are managing to work on the food system of the future despite all the suffering around us.

This month we dove deep into:

  • the role of farm to plate ingredients in the transition
  • the rise of zero budget natural farming in India
  • a third time fund manager designing the ideal regen ag fund
  • the real need (or not) for transition finance

Big news! Weekly episodes!
In May we switched from every two weeks to releasing a weekly episode. A 100% growth, you don't see that very often in regen ag! :-) There are simply too many interesting stories to share and thanks to the support of our members we can make this work!

What is the role of fully vertically integrated products in the regenerative transition of a farmer?
Interview with Bert Mulder, co-founder of Tomasu

Topic: We discover the story of the only micro soy sauce brewery in Europe as example of a product that really goes from soil to plate.

My thoughts: We don't discuss very often the role of (smaller) food companies and the ingredients they buy. How can they incentive their farmers to speed up their regenerative transition? Paying for quality not for quantity seems to be a good start.

Is Transition Finance key for every farmer?
Interview with Nicolas Verschuere, Co-founder and COO of Soil Capital

Topic: Is transition finance always necessary? This is the question we try to answer with Nicolas. He has some great insights from the work of Soil Capital around the world.

My thoughts: With all the talks about transition finance we often forget to ask the question: does the farmer actually need extra capital on his/her balance sheet? Nicolas shows us that it is often possible to save up to 30% on input costs and put that extra margin to work to start the regeneration of a farm. Without any extra outside capital....

How zero budget natural farming is taking off in India
Check in interview with Shameek Chakravarty of Farmizen

Topic: We interviewed Shameek 2 years ago. So much has happened, but their mission is still the same: providing high quality, organic produce from zero budget natural farms to people living in the larger Indian cities. Insights on the zero budget natural farming status in India, the issues and opportunities of organic and the appetite of investors for this type of farmers.

My thoughts: They made a lot of progress and seem to be on a very interesting path. Let's hope the current crisis helps not derails their efforts!

How to build the ideal regenerative fund structure
Interview with Atish Babu and Wood Turner of Agriculture Capital

Topic: After they have invested $800M through 2 funds into perennial crops as regeneratively as they could, Wood and Atish are thinking about the next step. How would a third fund look like, and if they could design it from scratch, what would the ideal regenerative fund vehicle look like? In terms of flexibility, duration, etc.

My thoughts:
Wood and Atish are in a unique situation. At AC they have the space and track record to start designing their third fund really from scratch. My question is how the investors (current and new) will respond to this! Some investor education is needed for sure :-)
