In Your Own Words...

Amy Baber

...on presenting at a school career event

CoTrain Business Admin apprentice (for Construction sector)
with Willmott Dixon Cobham
Along with my apprentice colleagues, we attended a careers event at a secondary school in Guildford.

The young people that we spoke to ranged between ages 14 and 18 years, as we had also spoken to Sixth Form students.

The types of thing we talked to them about was about construction and Willmott Dixon as a whole and how it is completely different to what most people think about construction.

I spoke to quite a few girls who had the same image of construction as I did before I started working for Willmott Dixon - that it would just be building, being on site with your hard hat and boots, but I think I managed to change a few of their minds.

I spoke about the 200 + roles that a company like Willmott has to offer. We also spoke to them about being an apprentice and the variety of work we get involved with while training.

We had a lot of interest and it would be great to see more females join the industry.

Amy is a Level 2 Business Admin apprentice on placement with Willmott Dixon in Cobham where she is supporting the Community Engagement team.

....and make their way into the world of employment.

CoTrain in partnership with CITB, has a proven success rate and all of our year 2 leavers have completed and passed their apprenticeships.

At the end of a two year programme, our objective is that our young trainees will either go in to full time employment, or to progress to a higher level qualification and continue with their training.

Of the eight apprentices to complete this year, four have been snapped up by the contractors hosting their placements, one is joining the Navy, two will progress on to Level 3 training; and we only have one remaining opportunity for an employer to benefit from taking on an enthusiastic and qualified Level 3 technician.

So what's next for our leavers...?

L2 Bricklaying
Abdul R has completed his level 2 training with Taylor Wimpey/A&B Brickworks in Eastleigh and will go into direct employment with A&B.

Nathan R begain his training with Bouygues, went on to join Bricklayers Ltd and for the final 6 months of his level 2 training has been on placement with Roberts Bros, where he remain for a further 12 months as he progresses on to his Level 3 bricklaying training.

Nathan F began his training with Willmott Dixon and has completed the second half of his level 2 training with KB Brickworks in Aylesbury and will remain with them as a Level 3 bricklaying apprentice.

BTEC Level 3 Site Technicians - Construction in the Built Environment
Craig C started his training with Osborne before moving on Morgan Sindall and then finally Galliford Try on their SNAC project in Southampton where he will continue with GT as a management trainee and a fully-fledged employee.
