ODEI Connections
Welcome to the 2018-2019 academic year! We are incredibly excited to enter our second year as the Office of Diversity, Equity, and inclusion (ODEI). This monthly newsletter will provide updates and resources to advance our work together and help us think about diversity as a strategic opportunity to fulfill our educational mission.

ODEI Highlight

The Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (ODEI) is pleased to offer seed grants to support initiatives that advance one or more of the University’s strategic diversity goal areas.

The following categories are eligible to apply:
  1. Academic departments initiating the Departmental Readiness Evaluation (DRE). Funding is intended primarily for faculty time dedicated to completion of the DRE.
  2. Operational departments that have submitted a diversity action plan. Funding is intended to facilitate the work proposed in the action plan.
Through the seed grant program, we hope to generate innovative ideas, encourage department-level planning, and foster a sense of mutual commitment to the work of diversity.

Capacity Building

One of the primary roles of the ODEI is to build individual and institutional capacity to engage the work of diversity. We do this by providing professional development workshops, consulting with students, staff, and faculty on diversity related matters, and working with search committees to identify strategies for diversity-aware hiring. 
The ODEI often uses the phrase the work of diversity instead of diversity. We see this an important distinction. Diversity as an adjective recognizes that individually we bring a broad range of social identities, backgrounds, perspectives, prior experiences, interests, talents, and skills to the SPU community. The work of diversity, as an action, suggests there is something we need to do collectively to create the environment, practices, strategies, and infrastructure to steward diversity well for the purpose of human flourishing. The ODEI exists to facilitate the latter.

Recommended Reading

Each month we will highlight a short chapter or article that can be used for your personal development or as a resource for your teams to learn together. The selected resources are meant to be highly accessible, quick reads on topics related to diversity. This month’s reading comes from keynote speaker, author, and consultant Joe Gerstandt, and is intended to dispel some of the myths about the work of diversity.

Teaching Tool

As you plan for your fall quarter classes, consider new ways to create an inclusive environment where all students are supported in their learning and are able to develop a sense of belonging. The recommendations we will provide each month focus on small steps that can be introduced without making substantial changes to your syllabus or course content. This month’s teaching tool can be used to learn more about your students, including their interest in the course topic, teaching approaches that have facilitated their prior learning, their expectations for the course, and their preferred pronunciation of their name. The article includes a variety of suggested questions; select those you think will provide the most useful information, and add some questions of your own!
