Voices for Children: Thursday June 6, 2019
Children’s Alliance is proud to present Tacoma advocate Kelly Blucher with the 2019 Brewster C. Denny Rising Advocate Award. We hope you will join us at the Voices for Children luncheon on Thursday, June 6 to help us celebrate and honor her advocacy for Washington's kids.

The Brewster C. Denny Rising Advocate Award honors a former Children’s Alliance board member and dedicated public servant. In his distinguished career of service to the people of our state, Brewster C. Denny nurtured and mentored many a rising star along the path of advocacy for the public good. Since 2011, this award has been presented to a rising star in child advocacy at the annual Voices for Children Luncheon.

“Work harder, get further, be extraordinary,” is a rule Kelly’s parents instilled in her. But as she worked to achieve self-sufficiency and provide for her family, it seemed the harder she worked, the less likely she was to get ahead. So Kelly set out to change the rules of the game though advocacy.

Upon returning to work after the birth of her third child, Kelly was soon pushed off the “benefit cliff” when two small raises at work resulted in the loss of her Working Connections childcare subsidy, her WIC benefits, and her health care coverage, raising her expenses by far more than the increase in income.

Seeing that families needed more support to afford child care and get ahead, Kelly realized by sharing her story that she wasn’t the only one. When she speaks up, she meets people who’ve faced the same challenges.

Kelly spent much of the first several months of 2019 learning how to navigate the state legislature to speak up for access to affordable child care. She credits the support of Children’s Alliance staff with calming her nerves and building her leadership.

“Families have been going through this struggle for a very long time,” she says. “I’m just sharing a story that’s experienced by so many other people.”
